The sudden collapse of a deep sinkhole along the Tau Hu canal road is suspected to be due to a leak in the main sewage pipeline.

At noon on January 18th, a section of Ba Dinh Street along the Tau Hu Canal, near Hung Phu Park (Chanh Hung Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), unexpectedly suffered a serious collapse, causing the road surface to break in half and slide into the canal. The sinkhole covers an area of more than ten square meters, is about 5 meters deep, and occupies nearly half the width of the road, posing a danger to the surrounding residential area.

According to reports, at around 11:00 AM on the same day, residents noticed numerous long cracks appearing on the surface of Ba Dinh Street. Just a few minutes later, large sections of asphalt suddenly broke and collapsed, creating deep holes. At the same time, sidewalk paving stones, a nearly 20-meter-long section of the embankment railing, and a tree along the roadside were also swept away into the Tau Hu Canal.

The incident occurred near a densely populated residential area, close to three 22-story apartment towers with over 700 apartments. Fortunately, at the time of the collapse, many people noticed the unusual subsidence of the road surface and proactively stopped their vehicles from a distance, so no casualties were reported.

Residents living near the site said that in the days prior, they had seen water leaking through cracks in the sidewalk, the railings along the canal, and the concrete embankment below. This morning, the road surface began to crack and the cracks spread very quickly. Local residents proactively warned motorcyclists to avoid the dangerous area. It is possible that the underground pipes had been leaking for a long time, causing soil erosion and leading to the road collapse.

Immediately after the incident, local militia and police quickly cordoned off the scene, erected barricades at a distance to ensure safety, and regulated traffic in the area.

A representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Drainage Company stated that the incident occurred on a wastewater drainage line under their management. Currently, many workers have been mobilized to inspect the site, determine the specific cause, and propose solutions for repair and remediation as soon as possible.

Ba Dinh Street is nearly 1.5 km long and 10-14 m wide, running along the Tau Hu Canal. Connecting from Ba Dinh Wharf to the border of Binh Hung commune, it is an important route passing through densely populated residential areas and canal-side parks.

* On the afternoon of January 18th, the People's Committee of Chanh Hung ward announced that, initially, the authorities have identified the cause of the subsidence incident on a section of Ba Dinh road (near Hung Phu 310 Park).

According to a representative from the Chánh Hưng Ward People's Committee, the incident caused subsidence of approximately 30 meters of Ba Đình Street along the Tàu Hủ Canal embankment. Additionally, about 16 meters of the road surface (including the sidewalk and a portion of the road) subsided from the top of the embankment into Ba Đình Street.

On January 18th, the People's Committee of Chanh Hung Ward, in coordination with the Center for Technical Infrastructure Management, the Center for Waterway Management (under the Department of Construction), and the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction in District 8, conducted a site inspection.

According to a report from the Center for Technical Infrastructure Management, since January 10th, the unit has recorded instances of sidewalk subsidence in the area near the Ba Dinh - Le Quang Kim intersection.

During an inspection of the D1800 wastewater transfer pipeline (located at a depth of 10m), authorities discovered water leakage and infiltration through the pipe joint at section 2 (the junction between sections 1-2 and sections 2-3). This leakage is likely related to the subsidence of Ba Dinh Street.

Following this incident, the People's Committee of Chanh Hung Ward requested the Department of Construction to urgently direct temporary reinforcement measures and cordon off the site to prevent the sinkhole from expanding. The ward also requested a plan for a definitive solution to ensure traffic flow before the Lunar New Year in 2026.

Authorities arrived at the incident site and set up barricades.

According to residents living near the scene, there was a lot of traffic on Ba Dinh street when the incident occurred, but fortunately, many people saw the road collapsing from a distance and were able to stop their vehicles in time, so there was no damage to people or property.

Immediately after the incident, Chanh Hung ward and other units sealed off the road, erected barricades, put up ropes, and installed warning signs to ensure the safety of passersby.
