Profits will triple in 2024.

The 2025 winter crop season in Tue Tinh commune – the carrot-growing capital of Hai Phong city – started unfavorably with heavy rains and storms, causing flooding in many newly sown areas. However, thanks to intensive farming techniques and favorable weather conditions later on, the carrots not only recovered but also produced superior quality roots and fetched high prices.

As of the end of January 2026, on the alluvial plains along the Thai Binh River, even though the main harvest season was still about two weeks away, the "fever" of high prices and the eagerness of traders had made this rural area more bustling than ever.

The estimated carrot production for the 2025 winter crop in Hai Phong is over 75,000 tons, of which over 80% will be for export, mainly to Japan and South Korea.

Mr. Phung Duc Soat, a farmer from An Phu village, shared: "At the beginning of the season, due to the storms and floods, the villagers lost sleep and appetite because they had to replant a second and third time. But now, seeing the carrots are large, uniform, shiny, and beautiful, and the price is at a record high, all the fatigue has disappeared. Traders have already placed orders and paid in advance, and we are just waiting for the day to harvest the carrots to have the most prosperous Tet holiday ever."

Currently, the area dedicated to carrot production in Duc Chinh commune reaches 510 hectares. In addition, residents in the commune have proactively leased approximately 1,200 hectares of alluvial land in neighboring areas along the Thai Binh River to expand production, bringing the total carrot cultivation area to over 1,700 hectares.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Tue Tinh commune, carrot prices this year range from 11 to 13 million VND per sao (360m2). Meanwhile, average investment costs (including seeds, fertilizer, and labor) are approximately 4.5 million VND, resulting in an average net profit of 7 to 9 million VND per sao of carrots. With an expected yield of 2 tons per sao, each hectare of carrots this season will generate revenue of over 300 million VND. After deducting expenses, farmers can pocket nearly 200 million VND.

"Up to this point, about 97% of the carrot crop in the area has been sold by farmers to traders and businesses right in the fields. Compared to last year, the profit margin is 2.5 to 3 times higher. Last year, the highest profit per sao (approximately 1000 square meters) was only about 3 million VND," Ms. Hanh informed.

According to Ms. Hanh, to ensure the reputation of the local carrot brand, the commune government has closely coordinated with cooperatives and the Hai Phong Department of Agriculture and Environment to guide farmers on cultivation processes. Every year, the commune People's Committee organizes workshops and training sessions on food safety, guiding farmers to keep production diaries and strictly control the use of chemicals. Achieving the OCOP 4-star certification has also been a leverage to help Tuệ Tĩnh carrots penetrate major supermarket chains nationwide and be purchased by businesses for processing and export.

To date, the Duc Chinh Agricultural Service Cooperative in Tue Tinh commune has been granted 4 carrot growing area codes for export purposes and has signed long-term contracts with 5 foreign companies from South Korea, Malaysia, and Cambodia, along with 18 domestic companies.

Aiming for an international brand

Carrots from Hai Phong City have the advantage of being crisp, sweet, and visually appealing thanks to the alluvial soil of the Thai Binh River. However, in the context of increasing scrutiny from international markets, businesses need to cooperate more closely with farmers from the beginning of the season to control the production process and conduct independent sample testing before export to minimize risks.

To achieve this result, in addition to market factors, quality control plays a vital role. Since over 80% of Hai Phong's carrot production is exported to demanding markets such as Japan, South Korea, and China, management of the growing areas is being prioritized to the highest level.

At the conference on solutions for managing carrot production areas for export held on January 27th, Ms. Luong Thi Kiem, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hai Phong City, gave specific directives. She also requested that localities and cooperatives tighten management, especially by maintaining complete production logs and strictly controlling the use of pesticides. Active ingredients that pose a risk to pesticide residue levels must absolutely not be used to ensure the reputation of the city's agricultural products.

In addition, Ms. Kiem also emphasized the need to strengthen pest monitoring in the soil and conduct strict pesticide residue testing before harvesting. This is a mandatory step to ensure that shipments fully meet the stringent standards of importing countries.

Currently, the Japanese and Korean markets are applying the Positive List System (PLS) with very low residue control thresholds. If violations are detected, the shipment will not only be returned but will also face the risk of 100% inspection for subsequent shipments, causing significant losses to the entire industry.

For growing areas supplying the Chinese market, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hai Phong City requires strict maintenance and management of growing area codes, packaging facility codes, and complete traceability documentation for export. The People's Committees of communes and wards with growing areas need to strengthen propaganda and strictly manage agricultural input businesses in their localities to prevent the use of chemicals not on the approved list.

During his visit to the carrot growing area in Tue Tinh commune on January 14th, Mr. Le Tien Chau, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Secretary of the Hai Phong City Party Committee, was very pleased with the achievements of the people in the winter crop season. He directed the agricultural sector to continue supporting infrastructure planning, applying high-tech science and technology, and strengthening chain linkages to enhance value, not only focusing on exporting fresh carrots but also aiming for deep processing.
