Nui Thanh district is a locality with a traditional squid fishing profession. After 3 months at sea, the ship was brought in to prepare for inspection and sale to traders.

Starting the trip in the middle of the 9th lunar month, Mr. Pham Quyen (Tam Quang commune), owner of the ship with license plate QNA-91234, can now be happy when his ship safely docks.

Mr. Quyen said that in winter, there are often many storms and tropical depressions, which limit squid fishing time. However, in return, this season there are many squids, making the fishing process go smoothly.

“We were at sea for nearly 3 months but only exploited for 23 nights. The rest of the time, our ship anchored to avoid bad weather at Song Tu Tay Island. But luckily, we found a sea area rich in resources, so on average, each crew member collected 3-6 tons of dried squid,” said Mr. Quyen.

It is known that squid fishing is a very typical profession. After going out to sea, each crew member must drop a basket in the middle of the sea to fish by themselves, communicating with each other by walkie-talkie. Squid fishing time is from 4 pm to dawn the next day. On the boat, people are assigned to peel and dry the squid every day.

Fisherman Tran Thanh Ba (Sam Linh Dong village, Tam Quang commune) said that this trip he caught 350 kg of dried squid. With the selling price of 155 thousand VND/kg, after deducting expenses, he earned about 30 million VND.

“This is the end of the year, going to sea is difficult, but thinking about Tet, there are many things to worry about, we fishermen always try our best. Not only to improve the economy but also to go out to sea, stick to the sea to protect the country's maritime sovereignty " - Mr. Ba confided.

Launching seafood exploitation in 2023, Nui Thanh has more than 1,900 motorized boats with a total capacity of more than 220,000CV. Each year, it supplies 30-40 thousand tons of seafood. The main seafood exploitation occupations of the locality are purse seine, offshore squid fishing and seine net.
