Green returns
In the 30-hectare Bau Tron vegetable field in Dai Loc commune ( Da Nang city), green is returning after days of being submerged in fierce floods. All along the field, rows of vegetables are sprouting, green on the ground still covered with alluvium from the devastating flood a few weeks ago.

Amidst the green color, Mr. Nguyen Huu Chinh, a resident of Bau Tron village, was diligently plowing the soil, his strong hands quickly turning each hoe. He said that the recent flood had submerged nearly an acre of his family's vegetables, the entire area of squash, bitter melon, pumpkin... wilted after many days of being submerged in water. After the water receded, he and his wife struggled to clean up the vegetable field, weed, plow, make beds, fertilize to improve the soil... About 2 weeks ago, Mr. Chinh planted seedlings. Now, the squash is growing well, covering the beds with green.
“In addition to worrying about the land, I also have to worry about the seeds. This time, I have to write off the debt to the dealer and only pay it back when it’s time to sell. I just hope for favorable weather so I can sell vegetables for Tet and make a living. If there is support, it will help people,” Mr. Chinh shared.

This year’s rainy season, people in Bau Tron vegetable area suffered 5 consecutive floods, 3 of which caused total losses. As soon as the water receded, people quickly cleared the mud, rebuilt the trellis, and prepared the land for the new planting season. The Tet vegetable crop is always the most important crop, bringing the expectation of making up for the whole year’s expenses, so no one dares to delay.
Amidst the chaos of natural disasters, the most valuable thing is the farmers' "never-give-up" spirit and determination to restore production. Mr. Bui Duy Khanh, resident of Phu Phuoc village, Dai Loc commune, shared: "Farmers here always take the initiative in providing plants, seeds, and fertilizers, so people are ready to go to the fields when the weather is favorable. We have to endure natural disasters, but we cannot abandon our fields."
The government accompanies farmers
According to Chairman of Dai Loc Commune People's Committee Le Do Tuan Khuong, the recent flood has caused 145 hectares of local cultivated land to be silted up, many areas are no longer recognizable as the old fields. Faced with that situation, the commune government has urgently stepped in, mobilizing forces to support people in tilling the land, dredging mud, and restoring agricultural production.
“People are actively restoring production to meet the season. Each type of vegetable has its own planting schedule, so we have to take advantage of every day,” said Mr. Khuong.

In parallel with directing production, the locality has completed damage statistics and is implementing support plans. According to Mr. Khuong, the area of land for rice and other crops that was silted up after the flood is quite large, so the commune is focusing on improving the land and leveling the fields so that people can plant the winter-spring crop on time.
Not only Dai Loc, in Duy Xuyen commune (Da Nang city), the damage was also extremely severe. The large vegetable growing area of this area was swept away by the flood, many areas were washed away, buried or cut off by the flow. Chairman of Duy Xuyen commune People's Committee, Mr. Dang Huu Phuc said that as soon as the water receded, the locality mobilized maximum forces to clean up the environment, clear canals, and collect garbage floating on the fields.

“People are actively cleaning the fields, drying the soil, and preparing for planting. We are also collecting statistics on the demand for plants, seeds, and livestock to propose timely support from the City. The immediate goal is to restore short-term vegetable fields and prepare the necessary conditions to restore livestock farming to supply the market during the upcoming traditional Tet holiday,” said Mr. Phuc.
In the fields throughout the countryside of Da Nang, newly planted vegetable beds have begun to sprout green. Despite many worries about capital and weather, vegetable farmers are still persistent in their fields. For them, continuing to plant is not only an effort to recover from the fierce floods but also a way to preserve their profession and nurture hope for a favorable Tet vegetable season.
The Da Nang City Relief Mobilization Committee has just issued Decision No. 559 allocating more than VND 76.5 billion from the City's relief fund to support localities and units to overcome damage to agriculture and forestry; purchase and repair machinery and teaching equipment; make minor repairs to kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools; make minor repairs to irrigation canals, etc.
