At this time, peach growers in Hop Tien commune are pruning peach trees for their family's peach garden.
Mr. Hoang Ngoc Giang, village 5 in Hop Tien commune - a person with nearly 20 years of experience growing kumquat trees, said: "Whether it is kumquat trees for shaping or creating a regular pyramid shape, the current trend of kumquat tree growers is that the tree must be beautiful in all aspects: green leaves, young shoots, flowers, green fruit and ripe fruit. To meet this requirement, kumquat growers must have their own method to "please the eye" of consumers. Therefore, from the 9th lunar month until now, I have been regularly present in the kumquat garden to take care of the trees and prune unsatisfactory fruits. This pruning will reduce the amount of fruit on the tree, helping the remaining fruit to be big, round, and shiny. At the same time, the pruned fruit will sprout, flower and bear fruit. Thus, the kumquat tree when it reaches consumers meets all requirements."
Along with pruning the unsatisfactory fruits, Mr. Giang also considers spraying fungicide and insect repellent for kumquat trees important, because kumquat trees at this time are susceptible to fungal diseases and insect repellent attacks. The spraying of fungicide lasts until the end of the 11th lunar month.
Thanks to his attention to the kumquat garden and understanding the trends of kumquat growers, his family's kumquat garden is very beautiful. Although there are still nearly 3 months until Lunar New Year, 1.5 sao of kumquat trees with 180 trees (3 years old) have been reserved and purchased by customers, at the price of 1.6 million VND/tree, bringing the family a profit of 100 million VND.
While kumquat growers are pruning away unwanted fruits and focusing on spraying fungicides and insect repellents on the trees, peach growers are also focusing on trimming the roots, digging up the roots, and preparing to strip the leaves by mid-November of the next lunar month... so that the peach trees can grow well, bud, and bloom in time for Tet.
Ms. Le Thi Van in Dong Thanh village shared: “My family planted more than 1.5 hectares of double peach trees with peach trees aged from 3 to 6 years. However, due to the impact of recent storms, only about 200 peach trees aged from 5 to 6 years old remained. The family focused on taking care of these peach trees by fertilizing them with root and leaf stimulants, so the peach trees are now growing well.”
According to Ms. Van, to serve people playing with peach trees during Tet, since the end of the 9th lunar month, she has hired workers to trim the buds and dig up the roots. The 200 peach trees have been trimmed a few days ago, and she will wait until the middle of the 11th lunar month to start stripping the leaves.
To have a beautiful peach garden that blooms on time for Tet, her family's peach garden is taken care of very carefully, so that the "peach eyes" are evenly spaced and have seven joints on a branch. Because peach trees are very sensitive to the weather, peach growers must regularly monitor and grasp the weather to calculate the leaf stripping schedule so that the flowers bloom on time for Tet. If the weather is too cold, the leaves should be stripped 5 to 7 days earlier to delay the peach blossoming, avoiding the peach blossom blooming before Tet. If the weather is warmer, the leaves should be stripped 7 to 10 days later. Taking care of peach trees is a job that requires meticulousness, effort, and a real understanding of the characteristics of peach trees to have a satisfactory peach garden.
From her experience in growing and caring for peach trees, Ms. Van's family's peach garden brings in a profit of 500 million VND after each Tet season. This year, due to the impact of floods and storms, the 200-tree peach garden has just finished trimming the roots, but customers have already come to buy 100 trees, at a price of 3 to 4 million VND/tree. "This money will be reused to invest in the peach acreage that was completely lost due to the storm," Ms. Van said.
Hop Tien commune currently has about 600 households participating in growing peach and kumquat trees, concentrated in villages 3, 4, 5, Dong Thanh, Tien Thanh, Quang Thanh, Noi Son..., with an area of over 100 hectares. However, due to the impact of storms this year, more than 40 hectares of peach and kumquat trees of local people were completely lost. The remaining peach and kumquat trees are currently being cared for by local people to prepare for the Tet market.
Talking about the effectiveness of growing peach and kumquat trees compared to other crops, Head of the Economic Department of Hop Tien Commune, Le Quang Loan, said: "Households participating in growing peach and kumquat trees all earn hundreds of millions of VND per year. The effectiveness of growing peach and kumquat trees has contributed to raising the current income of people in the commune to 73.77 million VND per person per year."
Although peach and kumquat growing brings high income, it is also very hard and requires a lot of care. With the desire to contribute to the spring atmosphere, peach and kumquat growers in Hop Tien commune are diligently taking care of the trees in order to have beautiful peach and kumquat trees for people to enjoy during Tet.
