Sweet tangerine garden on Ban Xeo rocky mountain

Previously, few people thought that the rocky, sloping land in Cua Cai village, old Muong Vi commune (now Ban Xeo commune) could grow tangerines. However, Giay Vang ethnic man Van Dung "forced" the rocks to give way, turning more than 1 hectare of rocky hills into a tangerine garden full of fruit. Thanks to the tangerine garden model combined with tourism, Mr. Dung's family has had an increasingly prosperous life.

In the early days of December, in Cua Cai village, Ban Xeo commune, what we easily noticed was the bustling, crowded atmosphere. The small stall of Mr. Vang Van Dung's family - where the plump tangerines are sold - is always crowded with visitors. The tangerines sell so well that many customers have to wait for Mr. Dung to go up the hill to pick more to serve them on time. Many people do not know that Mr. Dung sells imported fruits from Muong Khuong commune, but surprisingly, all those sweet tangerines are the result of his direct labor on Cua Cai land.

Mr. Dung's family's tangerine garden of more than 2,000 trees is planted on the high mountain area of Ban Xeo commune.

Taking us to visit the tangerine hill full of fruit, Mr. Dung told the story: The old Muong Vi commune in general, and Cua Cai village in particular, are mainly limestone and cat ear rocks, with high slopes, so farming is very difficult. In the past, people mainly grew corn and upland rice, but the productivity was low, the economic efficiency was not high, and life was still difficult for many years. In 2018, I went to the old Muong Khuong district to work for hire, and learned that people there planted tangerine trees on rocky mountains with high economic efficiency, so I learned how to grow them. Thinking that my hometown Cua Cai also has a cool climate and terrain similar to Muong Khuong, I bought 2,000 tangerine trees to plant with the hope that in the future, the tangerine trees will help my family have a more prosperous life.

When Mr. Vang Van Dung brought kumquat seedlings from Muong Khuong to plant on the rocky mountainside, many people in Cua Cai village were skeptical. They thought that the land here was difficult to grow corn, let alone kumquats, and were worried that this would be a waste of money and effort. Undaunted, Mr. Dung and his family decided to try. Sweat poured down. The whole family cleared trees and weeds, turning the entire hill into a kumquat garden. The efforts were not in vain, 4 years later, the first kumquat trees bore fruit, the quality of which was as sweet and fragrant as that of Muong Khuong kumquats. Mr. Dung was excited to expand the area to more than 1 hectare of sweet kumquats.

Many people come to Mr. Dung's family garden to pick sweet tangerines themselves.

Visiting Mr. Vang Van Dung's tangerine garden, we were amazed by the sight of 7-year-old tangerine trees on the steep hillside, each tree laden with fruit. The tangerines grown in the rocky mountains of Cua Cai village are not too big, but their skin is thin, juicy, and their sweet taste penetrates deep into the throat.

Over the past two years, Mr. Dung's family has harvested 5-6 tons of tangerines each year, earning more than 100 million VND. This year, the tangerine crop has been good, Mr. Dung's family expects to harvest about 10 tons of tangerines, earning more than 200 million VND. According to Mr. Dung, compared to growing corn, growing tangerines brings much higher economic value. Thanks to tangerine trees, his family's life has been more prosperous in recent years.

The sweet tangerine garden not only brings a more prosperous life to Mr. Vang Van Dung's family but also opens up new prospects for developing citrus fruit trees in Ban Xeo commune in the coming time.

The good news is that this year, Mr. Vang Van Dung's family not only reaped profits from selling tangerines, but also had additional income from welcoming visitors to experience their tangerine garden full of fruit.

Although the garden is on a high hill, about 1 km from the main road, many young people still come here to visit, pick tangerines and enjoy them right in the garden. Most visitors expressed surprise and impression at the first beautiful ripe tangerine garden of Ban Xeo commune.

Mr. Vang Van Dung revealed that every day there are 30-40 visitors coming to visit the garden. Each visitor only has to pay 20 thousand to freely eat tangerines in the garden and take souvenir photos.

Mr. Dung's family's tangerines are sold out as soon as they are harvested.

Coming to visit and experience the tangerine garden, Ms. Ly Ta May in Bat Xat commune shared: Before, I only knew that in the old Muong Khuong district there were many tangerine gardens, but today I was very surprised to know that right in Cua Cai village there is also a very beautiful and fruitful tangerine garden. I find the tangerines here very delicious, and picking tangerines in the garden is very interesting.

Engrossed with his friends in picking tangerines and playing in the tangerine garden until late afternoon, Mr. Chao A Ton, Bat Xat commune said he was very happy to experience the tangerine garden and buy tangerines for his relatives. In particular, the tangerine garden is on a high mountain, the air is fresh, and in the afternoon you can watch the beautiful sunset.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh - Vice Chairman of Ban Xeo Commune People's Committee, the tangerine growing model of Mr. Vang Van Dung's family is the first citrus fruit model in the commune. Mr. Dung's success on the rocky mountainside is not only a positive signal for local agriculture , but also brings a prosperous life to his family. Moreover, this model opens up a new direction for citrus fruit development in particular, agricultural development associated with tourism in general, creating a sustainable economic prospect for the Giay people in Cua Cai village in the coming years.
