Falcao will miss the 2026 World Cup. |
In a press conference early on May 15th, coach Nestor Lorenzo confirmed that Falcao was not included in the squad because he did not meet the professional requirements and lacked the ability to compete with his teammates.
"If Falcao reaches the same level as the other players on the list, he will certainly be there after what he has done for Colombian football," the Argentinian strategist shared.
Coach Lorenzo also emphasized that the criteria for selecting the squad are based entirely on performance and competition for each position.
"I really love Falcao. I always wanted him by my side, appearing in the opponent's penalty area, but that's football, you have to make choices," the coach added.
At 40 years old, Falcao currently plays for Millonarios but is struggling with his fitness. The striker, who previously played for Porto, Atletico Madrid, and AS Monaco, hasn't played since April 19th after fracturing his cheekbone and is still in the recovery process.
This season, Falcao has only played 9 matches for Millonarios and scored just one goal from a penalty kick against Aguilas Doradas in February. His declining form and injury problems have almost closed the door on his chances of participating in his final World Cup.
Falcao made his national team debut in 2007, scoring a total of 36 goals in 104 matches. His last appearance for Colombia was in 2023.
