Socializing vaccination programs helps develop sustainable livestock farming.

Socializing vaccination efforts is becoming a crucial solution for sustainable livestock development. The focus of this solution is to raise awareness among livestock farmers about proactive disease prevention and control, while simultaneously encouraging businesses to participate in the production and supply of vaccines and veterinary services. Local authorities are strengthening communication, supervision, and vaccination programs at the grassroots level, implementing biosecurity measures in livestock farming, and gradually reducing reliance on state budget funding.

Livestock farmers in Vo Mieu commune proactively vaccinate their animals to effectively prevent and control diseases.

Just over a decade ago, during vaccination and disinfection campaigns for livestock farming, farmers received partial government support for vaccine costs, storage, and vaccination services. As a result, vaccination rates for livestock in the province consistently exceeded 95% (except for rabies), disease control was effective, and major outbreaks were virtually nonexistent. However, this support mechanism also fostered a sense of dependence and complacency among some small-scale farmers, especially in mountainous areas, leading to a lack of proactive measures in protecting their livestock.

To alleviate the burden on the state budget and enhance the proactive role of livestock farmers in disease prevention and control, since 2015, Phu Tho province has gradually implemented the socialization of vaccination programs to prevent and control diseases, ensuring the safety of livestock herds, aiming to reduce small-scale farming, and build a concentrated, disease-free, and sustainable livestock industry.

The high rate of social participation in vaccination efforts in Tan Son commune has contributed to the stable development of livestock farming.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Lai Dong Commune People's Committee, said: "In the early stages of implementing the socialization of vaccination, the vaccination rate in the area dropped sharply because people were not yet accustomed to paying for the costs themselves. Through years of propaganda and mobilization, most livestock farmers have now developed a proactive awareness of vaccinating and caring for their livestock according to the correct procedures and age. As a result, in recent years, there have been no major outbreaks of livestock diseases in the commune."

By the end of 2025, the total livestock population in the province is expected to reach approximately 161,800 buffaloes, over 247,300 cattle, nearly 1.82 million pigs, and more than 37.5 million poultry. Total meat production is projected at approximately 471,000 tons; poultry egg production at around 1.65 billion eggs; and fresh milk production at over 62.3 million liters. Currently, the province has 113 cooperatives, 710 farms, and 46 large enterprises investing in the livestock sector. Farm-scale and enterprise-scale livestock production accounts for approximately 30% of the total pig population and 20% of the total poultry population.

In addition, the province has established 80 integrated supply chains for livestock products nationwide, encompassing production, processing, distribution, and consumption. The livestock sector continues to be restructured towards reducing small-scale farming and increasing concentrated farming; promoting the application of biosafety, disease control, and organic farming practices; ensuring proper waste management; and strengthening the application of science , technology, and information technology, while attracting large-scale, high-tech investments from businesses.

Socializing the vaccination program at large livestock farms contributes to preventing the spread of disease.

In recent years, apart from African swine fever, which caused widespread damage throughout the country, no major outbreaks or widespread transmission have occurred in the province. Even during the peak of the African swine fever epidemic, Phu Tho remained one of the localities that controlled the disease well, with low levels of damage compared to many other provinces and cities. This result was achieved thanks to the province's persistent and effective implementation of the socialization of vaccination efforts over a long period.

To further build upon the achievements already made, Mr. Hoang Manh Thong, Head of the Department of Livestock, Veterinary and Fisheries, stated: In the coming period, the Livestock and Veterinary sector will continue to coordinate with localities to strengthen propaganda and guidance for livestock farmers to proactively register for vaccination, disinfection, and environmental sanitation in livestock farming; and at the same time, advise people to choose vaccines from reputable establishments to ensure effective disease prevention and control.
