According to the Department of Hydrometeorology, the total rainfall in the Mekong Delta from January to March 2026 is higher than the average of many years (TBNN) and there is a high possibility of unseasonal rains in the first months of 2026.
During the dry season months of 2026, the time of hot weather will be similar to the average of 2025 (average around the first half of March), but later than the time of hot weather in the dry season of 2024. The intensity of hot weather will not be as severe and last for many days as in 2024.
Saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta in the first months of the 2025 - 2026 dry season will be at the same level as the 2024 - 2025 dry season and lower than the 2015 - 2016 and 2019 - 2020 dry seasons.
Specifically, in the dry season of 2024 - 2025, saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta will peak from February to April 2025 with 3 waves of increased saline intrusion, especially in the second half of March.
The salinity intrusion situation in the Mekong Delta depends on water sources from the upper Mekong River, the operation of reservoirs in the basin, high tides and will fluctuate in the coming time. Localities in the Mekong Delta need to regularly update hydrometeorological forecast information to have proactive measures to prevent and combat.
In response to forecasts from professional agencies, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province issued Directive No. 04 on drought and saltwater intrusion prevention and control in 2026 in Dong Thap province.
To proactively prevent and combat drought and saltwater intrusion, ensuring water sources for production and people's lives in the dry season of 2026 in the province effectively, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested heads of provincial departments, branches, relevant agencies and units and Chairmen of People's Committees of communes and wards in the province to focus on implementing many key tasks.
