Building 5 strategic pillars for Vietnam's aviation development

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has just reported the results of implementing the Transport Service Development Strategy according to Decision No. 318 of the Prime Minister . Currently, the country has 22 operating airports and one airport is under completion, Long Thanh International Airport.

In recent years, aviation infrastructure has been invested synchronously, modernly, and resources have been used effectively, contributing to promoting regional and international connectivity. The Department has also completed and submitted for approval plans and adjusted airport planning nationwide.

After the pandemic, the market will recover strongly from mid-2022. In the first 9 months of 2025, the total passenger volume of the whole market is estimated to reach more than 62 million passengers and more than 1 million tons of cargo, up more than 10% and nearly 18% over the same period last year. In particular, international transport is the main growth driver, while domestic transport remains stable, continuing to expand the fleet and route network.

In the period up to 2035, with a vision to 2050, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam aims to develop the aviation industry on five strategic pillars: Infrastructure, digital transformation, business capacity, high-quality human resources and sustainable institutions.

The goal by 2035 is for aviation to become a strategic economic sector, with leading competitiveness in Southeast Asia, maintaining long-term growth.

Vietnam's fleet size is expected to reach 300 - 320 aircraft, including specialized cargo aircraft. The industry will undergo comprehensive digital transformation, apply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and aim for net-zero emissions by 2050.

Vision 2050, forming two international air transit centers in the Capital region and Ho Chi Minh City; striving for 97% of the population to access airports within a radius of 100 km, with modern, smart, safe and environmentally friendly infrastructure.
