Muong Coi commune is blessed with fertile land and a temperate climate, suitable for growing crops, especially citrus fruits, especially oranges. More than 10 years ago, families from Hung Yen province who settled in Muong Coi commune brought Vinh orange and Duong Canh orange varieties to grow on this land. Orange trees in Muong Coi land have taken root, blossomed, and produced sweet fruit, bringing high income to many households here. From some initial models, up to now, the whole commune has nearly 550 hectares of oranges; orange growers not only apply safe production processes but also combine experiential tourism to increase product value, bringing high economic efficiency.
Along the two sides of the concrete road leading to the Nghia Hung Citrus Fruit Cooperative, the Vinh orange and Duong Canh orange gardens are ripening, the fruit is so heavy that the branches have to be supported with ropes. Welcoming us, Mr. Nguyen Van Su, Director of the Cooperative, the first person to bring orange trees to Muong Thai land, happily recounted: In 2010, after visiting some orange growing models in Hoa Binh , I decided to bring 500 Duong Canh orange trees, using seeds from Van Giang commune (Hung Yen) to plant on the family farm. After a period of care, in the third year, the trees began to yield their first harvest. In the first crop, nearly 15 tons of oranges were harvested, after deducting all expenses, the profit was 120 million VND, from then on, Duong Canh orange trees were officially present in Muong Coi.

In season, oranges and tangerines with sweet, aromatic, yellow, juicy segments and segments are just picked and have been purchased and transported for consumption by traders. Realizing the value of citrus fruit trees, in 2018, Mr. Su and 10 households in the village established the Nghia Hung Citrus Fruit Cooperative to exchange planting experiences and link product consumption. To date, the Cooperative has 27 hectares of oranges and tangerines, with an average output of nearly 300 tons/year; the selling price at the garden is about 30,000 - 35,000 VND/kg. The Cooperative's orange products have been recognized as meeting 3-star OCOP standards and are one of the typical agricultural products honored by the province.

Leaving the orange garden of Nghia Hung Citrus Fruit Cooperative, we visited the orange garden of Mr. Le Van Toan's family, a household with a large orange area in Van Tan village with more than 2 hectares. Also starting to grow oranges since 2010 with 300 trees, this year is the 9th year the orange garden has been harvested, Mr. Toan said: In order for the nearly ten-year-old orange garden to bear fruit, still giving a steady yield, high quality, sweet, juicy, I have chosen the organic growing method, using composted manure, combining microbial fermentation, utilizing corn flour, processed soybean flour to fertilize the trees instead of chemicals. Pest control for orange trees also mainly uses biological products, herbal medicines made from garlic, ginger, chili. Thanks to this method, the orange garden is less susceptible to pests, the soil is more fertile, the fruit quality is uniform, the appearance is beautiful, trusted by traders and customers, many traders even order the whole garden when the fruit is still green. Up to now, the orange garden has grown to 600 trees, with an annual yield of 40 - 50 tons of fruit, earning the family over 1 billion VND each year.
This year, orange growers in Muong Coi are even more excited because the oranges are producing beautiful and even fruit. At this time, oranges are starting to be sold on the market, attracting traders in the province and provinces and cities such as Phu Tho, Lao Cai, and Hanoi to come to the garden to buy. Oranges are grown in Van Yen, Van Tan, Phuc Yen, and Nghia Hung villages. Each year, the total output is estimated at nearly 6,000 tons; this year, it is expected to increase to 7,000 tons. Vinh oranges are harvested from mid-October to the end of November of the lunar calendar; and sugar oranges are harvested from November to December of the lunar calendar. At the time before Tet, the price of sugar oranges can increase to 60,000 VND/kg.
After 15 years of taking root, orange trees have become the main crop in Muong Coi. With delicious quality and characteristic sweetness, orange products here are increasingly favored by consumers and have affirmed their brand in the market.
To build the Muong Coi orange brand, in recent times, the commune has actively coordinated with specialized agencies to organize training, transfer science and technology, practice production, and guide farmers to comply with the principles to produce safe oranges; organize the supply of seedlings for households registering for new planting; encourage people to establish cooperatives and cooperative groups to link production and consumption of products; packaging and labels to help consumers fully identify information about the production process, origin and source.

Mr. Phan Ngoc Linh, Chairman of Muong Coi Commune People's Committee, shared: Promoting the previous "Phu Yen Orange" brand, right after operating the government according to the new model, Muong Coi commune mobilized people to expand the area of organic oranges, VietGAP; assessed the production capacity of cooperatives and households as a basis to mobilize people to participate in brand building. In addition, working with cooperatives and production groups to assess consumption capacity, listen to farmers' support proposals and have a timely solution plan; planting new orange varieties associated with spreading the crop to extend the harvest time. Along with that, the commune organized the first Muong Coi Orange Festival associated with agricultural tourism and experience activities, to promote and support the consumption of agricultural products for people, contributing to increasing farmers' income, creating more resources for building new rural areas in the area.
Coming to Muong Coi these days, looking at the orange and tangerine gardens full of fruit, replacing the previously barren hills and fields, we can see the dynamism and efforts of the people who have put in to change this land. With the support of the Party Committee and the government, the Muong Coi orange brand will soon be affirmed, bringing stable income and opportunities to get rich for the people here.
