Branding for honey products

With guidance and advice from the local Women's Union after the start-up competition, the honey beekeeping model of Ms. Truong Thi Thuy (47 years old, in Minh Hung ward, Chon Thanh town, Binh Phuoc province) has developed, aiming to build a brand, instead of just selling raw products.

Ms. Truong Thi Thuy said that before, she and her husband worked as rubber tappers, an unstable job. Once, she attended a training course on entrepreneurship organized by the Women's Union of Chon Thanh district, and visited successful entrepreneurship models, including the beekeeping model.

From then on, she began to consider learning to pursue a career in beekeeping. After being instructed by a relative on how to do it, she and her husband boldly invested in beekeeping boxes. Initially, they only had 20 boxes, but now they have built up nearly 400 boxes.

Ms. Thuy shared: "I see that consumers are increasingly interested in safe products and prefer natural products. Taking advantage of the local resources of rubber flowers, coffee, cashews, etc., my husband and I decided to invest in a beekeeping model for honey. We have been implementing this model for 9 years.

I am being supported by the local Women's Union to borrow 50 million VND to invest in more beekeeping boxes. Each month, my family has an income of about 50 million VND, after deducting expenses, the profit is nearly 20 million VND. Currently, the products are sold to traders, not retail. Because they are sold through intermediaries, the profit is still low."

Ms. Thuy's beekeeping project won the consolation prize in the "2023 Women's Entrepreneurship Competition" organized by the Binh Phuoc Women's Union. After the competition, Ms. Thuy gained a lot of experience and began to learn more about label making and branding processes.

"The Association's staff advised me to build a brand. Currently, I am asking the Association for advice and support to register labels and brands, sell products directly, and increase the value of my products," Ms. Thuy shared.

To maintain the model, the couple must be united and make efforts to overcome difficulties. According to Ms. Thuy, many people think that beekeeping is easy, but in reality it is not. Beekeepers often have to eat and sleep in the forest, and must know which season the flowers bloom in order to move the bee colonies to places with abundant nectar sources.

Thuy and her husband have to go to other areas such as Hue, Lam Dong , rent land from local people to place the boxes and stay there for 5-6 months, after the harvest is finished, they move on to find flower areas with nectar for the bees to collect. In addition, the beekeeper must also have a firm grasp of techniques, understand the habits of bees, and know the weather.

In addition to being a good businesswoman , Ms. Thuy is also an active member of the Women's Union, participating in the activities of the Union. She is invited to attend meetings to share experiences and provide technical support to members and people who intend to start a business in beekeeping for honey.

"Except for the times I move to other regions, when I'm in my hometown, I often participate in local activities. Because I understand that to have success today, in addition to my own efforts, there is also the support of the Association and the local agricultural sector," Ms. Thuy confided.

Ms. Mac Thi Thanh Binh, President of the Women's Union of Chon Thanh town, commented: "Recently, the women's start-up movement in Chon Thanh has developed strongly. Many start-up and business models have been born, inspiring women to strive to become rich legitimately. Among them, Ms. Thuy's beekeeping model is one of the effective models, bringing high economic benefits."
