Toyota Hilux BEV electric pickup truck will have a more "accessible" price
The Toyota Hilux electric (Hilux BEV) has been launched. However, the price of the car has made many people curious when the company only revealed that it will be "accessible" and not necessarily cheap.

The Toyota Hilux BEV is developed on a significantly improved 9th generation platform and will initially target business customers, especially fleets operating in the mining industry – which is particularly suitable for electric powertrains due to the underground working environment. Toyota's Hilux BEV electric pickup truck will be available in Australia in the first half of 2026, but Toyota has yet to announce specific markets where the vehicle will be distributed.
“We know it won’t be a bestseller, but it has to be competitive and accessible enough for those who need it. So it has to be ‘attainable,’” Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales and marketing, told Drive. While the current Hilux mild-hybrid version in Australia starts from 65,990 AUD (about 42,800 USD), Toyota does not rule out the possibility that the BEV version could be up to 15,000 AUD (about 9,700 USD) more expensive, bringing the price closer to the 80,000 AUD mark. “There’s no point in us launching an electric pickup for $100,000,” Mr Hanley said bluntly. “It needs to be an affordable option.” The Hilux BEV is powered by a 59.2 kWh battery pack and a dual electric motor system, producing 193 horsepower.
However, the operating range only stops at 240 km (according to WLTP standards), a rather modest number compared to electric pickup models currently on the market such as the Ford F-150 Lightning or Rivian R1T. While it may appeal to a certain number of individual buyers, Toyota is clearly positioning the Hilux BEV as a niche vehicle. “I wouldn’t say it’s going to be a global hit or a mass-market seller. That’s not what it’s built for,” Hanley added. “But it’s possible that some mechanics, engineers, and small businesses might be interested.” The Hilux BEV is a cautious but strategic step for Toyota in its transition to electric vehicles. Rather than targeting the mass consumer market, the electric pickup will focus on addressing a niche need – where zero-emission performance and operating economy are key.
According to the announcement from the manufacturer Toyota, the new Hilux pickup will be available in Europe and Australia in December 2025, then in Asian markets in 2026 and launched in the Japanese domestic market in mid-2026.
