The Kia PV5 Cargo electric van has just set an impressive new Guinness World Record. On September 30, a Kia PV5 Cargo L2H1 equipped with a 71.2 kWh battery completed a distance of 693.38 km on a single charge, setting a record for the distance traveled by a light-duty battery-powered van. The achievement is particularly noteworthy as it far exceeds the 415 km claimed by Kia for the model. The record trip was made possible by veteran journalist George Barrow and Kia engineer Christopher Nigemeier, who sought to optimize every kWh of power.
The record was not achieved in an ideal environment, but on public roads north of Frankfurt, Germany, under real-world operating conditions. The PV5 had to deal with city intersections, traffic lights, roundabouts and repeated altitude runs of around 370 meters. The Kia PV5 Cargo electric van completed the 61.47km loop a total of 12 times in 22 hours and 30 minutes. Importantly, the entire journey was done at full load, demonstrating both its energy efficiency and outstanding reliability for urban delivery operations. Inspectors from TÜV Hessen monitored compliance with the weight limit, while GPS tracking and on-board cameras recorded the entire process. The PV5 is the first member of Kia's highly anticipated PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) family, built on the new E-GMP.S platform.
It is the commercial version of the E-GMP platform used on successful electric vehicles such as the EV6 and EV9. Like its combustion-engined commercial vehicles, the PV5 is designed to be modular, allowing customers to order it as a van, truck or minivan. The PV5 Cargo is available in mid-range (51.5 kWh) and long-range (71.2 kWh) battery versions. It offers up to 4.7 cubic metres of usable cargo space and an impressive payload capacity of up to 800 kg. Kia also claims a notable figure that the PV5 loses just 1.5% of its range for every 99 kg of extra cargo, a very important figure for an electric commercial vehicle.
The success of the PV5 is just the beginning. Kia’s future plans include adding more electric trucks to its electric light vehicle (eLCV) lineup. A larger electric Kia PV7 is expected to arrive in 2027, and an even larger PV9 will follow later this decade.
