The Chinese electric car market has just witnessed a spectacular takeover in October, when the Xiaomi YU7 electric SUV officially surpassed its formidable rival Tesla Model Y in sales. According to Car News China, this is an important milestone affirming the strong breakthrough of technology giant Xiaomi in the field of automobile manufacturing.

The consolidated reports painted a clear picture of October's business results. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Xiaomi sold a total of 48,654 cars of all kinds, of which the flagship model YU7 alone contributed 33,662 cars.

Meanwhile, statistics from ECC show that Tesla's total wholesale volume in China reached approximately 61,500 vehicles. However, this figure includes approximately 35,400 vehicles for export. Thus, the actual number of Tesla vehicles consumed by domestic customers is only about 26,100 vehicles. With this result, Xiaomi YU7 has had a convincing sales victory over direct competitors in the segment, including Tesla Model Y, in the billion-people market.

The October performance helped Xiaomi enter the top 10 best-selling new energy vehicle (NEV) brands in China, on par with giants like BYD or Tesla. The Xiaomi YU7 model also quickly took a position in the top best-selling mid-size electric SUVs in the country.

Xiaomi previously announced that it would begin delivering the YU7 to customers on July 6. Preliminary calculations show that the total number of YU7s successfully delivered to date has exceeded 70,000, an astonishing growth rate for a new brand entering the market.

Xiaomi Auto’s rapid growth is no accident. Chinese analysts say a large part of its success comes from its “secret weapon”: the ability to deeply integrate its own software and a huge network of consumer electronics products.

Owning a complete technology ecosystem has helped Xiaomi effectively attract young customers, who are already familiar with and trust its products, to the rapidly growing electric vehicle segment in China.
