The trend of giving lucky money online during Tet (Lunar New Year).

Amidst the modern pace of life and the powerful wave of digital transformation, the custom of giving lucky money at the beginning of the year – a beautiful traditional cultural aspect of the Vietnamese people – is taking on a "new look." Giving lucky money online is gradually becoming a familiar choice for many people in Lao Cai, especially young people.

"Li xi" is a custom of giving lucky money in red envelopes at the beginning of the year, considered a beautiful cultural tradition associated with wishes for health, prosperity, and happiness. This tradition has existed for generations, providing an opportunity for grandparents and parents to express their love to their children and grandchildren, and is a familiar image every Tet holiday.

However, as society becomes increasingly modern, especially in the context of strong digital transformation, many traditional customs have begun to change to suit the new lifestyle. One of these is the online giving of lucky money, implemented directly on banking applications, e-wallets, and social networks. With just a few taps on their phones, users can instantly send digital envelopes with New Year greetings to recipients no matter how far away they are.

The online lucky money envelopes for the Year of the Horse (Bính Ngọ) are designed attractively.

Being an outgoing person who enjoys connecting with others and has friends all over Vietnam, Nguyen Linh Chi (20 years old), from Cam Duong ward, a student at the Academy of Journalism and Communication, believes that sending lucky money online has become an almost indispensable option every Tet holiday. According to Chi, when time is limited and geographical distance makes in-person meetings inconvenient, these "digital envelopes" allow her to easily send New Year greetings to friends far away with just a few taps on her phone.

Chi said that she used to send Lunar New Year money through bank accounts, but this method was quite simple and lacked the festive atmosphere of Tet. Since apps integrated the lucky money feature with red envelope interfaces, accompanying wishes, and a symbolic "opening the envelope" action, she clearly felt the excitement and anticipation of the recipients.

"The feeling of waiting to open the envelope is still there, only everything happens on the phone screen. For me, it's a harmonious blend of tradition and technology," Chi expressed.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Luu Duc Nghia from Lao Cai ward has also chosen to give lucky money online in recent years. According to him, convenience and geographical distance are the biggest reasons.

"After the New Year's Eve moment, it's not always possible to gather all family and friends together. Sending lucky money online allows me to send good wishes immediately, even if the recipient is far away. The most important thing is still the sentiment and the New Year's greetings," said Mr. Nghia.

Responding to increasing customer demand, many banks have proactively integrated online lucky money features directly into their digital banking applications. Beyond simple money transfers, these applications feature vibrant envelope designs, reflecting the festive spirit of Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), allowing users to send personalized greetings and even send lucky money to multiple people simultaneously. The convenience, speed, and emphasis on emotional connection have made this method increasingly popular among customers.

Users can choose an amount of money that has auspicious meaning according to feng shui.

Ms. Hoang Phuong Dung, Deputy Head of Customer Department at Vietnam Foreign Trade Commercial Bank (Vietcombank) Lao Cai Branch, shared: “We focus on three elements: speed, safety, and emotion. Customers can give lucky money in seconds, with high security, and can choose electronic envelopes and greetings that capture the spirit of the Lunar New Year.”

According to Ms. Dung, this feature is not simply about transferring money, but also a novel digital experience, especially appealing to young people and busy individuals during the Lunar New Year holiday.

Despite its convenience, many cybersecurity experts warn users to be cautious of scams exploiting the festive atmosphere of Tet (Lunar New Year) to trick people into sending "online lucky money" through fake bank accounts, e-wallets, or friends in order to steal money and personal information. People should only transact through official applications, avoid accessing suspicious links, and not provide OTP codes to anyone.

Online lucky money giveaways promote cashless payments in the digital age.

From an expert's perspective, Mr. To Van Thanh, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Foreign Trade Commercial Bank (Vietcombank) Lao Cai Branch, commented: In the context of strong digital transformation, online lucky money is growing rapidly, especially during Tet (Lunar New Year). This not only reflects the trend of digital payments but also contributes to enhancing the experience of modern financial services for the people.

According to Mr. Thanh, online lucky money giving does not diminish traditional values but is helping this custom adapt to the technological age. Even from afar, people can still send good wishes for the new year, maintaining the spirit of good fortune and sharing. The role of banks is to ensure convenience and security so that the beautiful cultural tradition of giving lucky money at the beginning of the year can develop sustainably.

In reality, many families still maintain the traditional practice of giving red envelopes directly to children and grandparents during New Year's gatherings. Meanwhile, online lucky money giving has become a flexible option for friends, colleagues, and relatives who live far away.

This parallel shows that culture is not being replaced but is adapting to the new context. In the flow of digital transformation, "digital envelopes" are contributing to making Tet more convenient and faster while still retaining its rich cultural identity. However, whether it's a bright red paper envelope or an electronic envelope on a phone screen, what Vietnamese people convey to each other every spring is always sincere affection and belief in a prosperous and lucky new year.
