Despite a decline in total exports compared to December 2025 (down 23.8%) and the same period last year (down 22.1%), the market still recorded notable positive signs from the ASEAN region.

Accordingly, Thailand led in growth rate with a 271.4% increase compared to the previous month, reaching 26 tons. This was followed by the Philippines with a 150% increase (reaching 5 tons); Myanmar and Malaysia both increased by 100% (15 tons and 4 tons respectively); and Singapore increased by 45.5% (reaching 16 tons).

In contrast to the upward trend in ASEAN, the largest markets for Vietnamese star anise all recorded downward adjustments in January.

India remains the largest market (accounting for 63.1% of the market share) with 640 tons, but this represents an 8.7% decrease compared to the previous month. The United States reached 70 tons (accounting for 6.9% of the market share), a sharp decline of 51.4%. China reached 48 tons, a decrease of 65.2%. Germany is a rare bright spot outside of ASEAN with 34 tons, a 36% increase and accounting for 3.4% of the market share.

The breakthrough in new markets in January 2026 signals a continuation of the previous year's growth. In 2025, Vietnam exported a total of 14,307 tons of star anise, earning $58.7 million. Although the export volume for the year increased by 2.2%, the export value decreased by 8% compared to 2024 due to price fluctuations.

The two leading consumers of Vietnamese star anise last year remained India (9,896 tons, accounting for nearly 70% of the market share) and the United States (1,030 tons, a strong growth of 82.9%).
