Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association - said that the reason for the breakthrough in fruit and vegetable exports this year is that China and many other countries have increased their purchases of Vietnamese goods. In 2022, this country signed a series of protocols with Vietnam, creating a stepping stone for fruit and vegetable exports to achieve many advantages.
This year, Vietnam has many new export fruit and vegetable products and consumption markets. In particular, durian has been granted more growing area codes, helping export activities to flourish. The output and quality of durian in particular and fruits and vegetables in general have improved a lot this year, helping to stabilize output.
In addition, logistics infrastructure such as roads, warehouses, and delivery yards have been renovated and newly built, helping export activities reduce costs and create more competitive prices compared to competitors.
According to Mr. Nguyen, China is considering allowing Vietnamese fresh coconuts to be officially exported. If approved in the near future, this will also be a series of fruits joining the billion-dollar club. Recently, the US has also allowed Vietnam to re-export fresh coconuts (the type with the green skin and part of the white fiber removed).
According to the Plant Protection Department ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ), Vietnamese fruit and vegetable products are increasingly being exported. Authorities are negotiating to open the market for passion fruit to the US and Australia; grapefruit to Japan, Korea, Australia and India; durian to India; and citrus fruits, coconuts and frozen durian to China.
Fruit exporters said that fruit and vegetable consumption will continue to increase at the end of the year as China enters the festival season. The country is also increasing purchases of new fruits from Vietnam such as purple star apple and red-fleshed jackfruit. It is expected that by the end of 2023, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports will easily reach the target of 5.5 billion USD.
