Durian exports contribute greatly to the fruit and vegetable industry.

According to the Center for Industry and Trade Information ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), the growth in fruit and vegetable exports in the first months of this year was mainly due to the sharp increase in durian exports to the Chinese market.

Durian is currently the most exported fruit with more than 2.1 billion USD in the first 8 months of 2024, up 67.7% over the same period last year; in addition, exports of longan, coconut, mango, and areca nuts also increased sharply.

Dragon fruit exports alone are still on a downward trend. In the first 8 months of 2024, the export turnover of this item decreased by 19.4% compared to the same period in 2023, down to 358.9 million USD, accounting for 9.8%.

In August 2024, Vietnam and China signed two Protocols on requirements for inspection, plant quarantine and food safety for frozen durian and fresh coconut exported from Vietnam to China, effective from August 19, 2024. The above two Protocols will be the basis for stronger growth in the export of these two fruits in the last quarter of the year.

The Center for Industry and Trade Information believes that in the fourth quarter of 2024, fruit and vegetable exports will continue to be supported by increased demand from world markets at the end of the year, especially the Chinese market, combined with the effectiveness of trade agreements and protocols.

In 2024, the export turnover of fruits and vegetables is forecast to reach over 7 billion USD, an increase of more than 25% compared to 2023. This will be a new record for this export group.

Previously in 2023, fruits and vegetables were the export commodity group with the most impressive growth rate, with a record turnover of 5.69 billion USD, an increase of 69.2% compared to 2022. This was also the first industry to open the "club" of 5 billion USD.

Regarding the types of exported fruits and vegetables in 2023, compared to the same period in 2022, the fruit group (fresh and frozen) reached 4.2 billion USD, an increase of 112%; followed by the processed fruit and vegetable group reaching nearly 1.2 billion USD, an increase of 18%; the vegetable group reaching 279 million USD, an increase of 4.9%. Regarding the market in 2023, China continues to hold the No. 1 position with a turnover of more than 3.7 billion USD, an increase of 149% (equivalent to an increase of more than 2 billion USD) compared to 2022 and accounting for about 65.4% of the total fruit and vegetable export turnover of the countries.

By the end of 2023, Vietnam will have 14 agricultural products with official export "visas" to the Chinese market, including: bird's nest and bird's nest products, sweet potatoes, dragon fruit, longan, rambutan, mango, jackfruit, watermelon, banana, mangosteen, black jelly, lychee, passion fruit and durian.

This year, Vietnam has officially exported batches of fresh coconuts to this market.

Regarding durian, in just 10 months of 2023, exports officially surpassed the 2 billion USD mark when reaching 2.07 billion USD, an increase of 606.3% over the same period in 2022. In the whole year of 2023, durian exports brought in 2.24 billion USD. Thus, from 2023 to now, durian is still the number 1 export product of the fruit and vegetable industry.

According to forecasts, by 2025, China's durian market could reach 20 billion USD and the world's 28.6 billion USD. The demand for durian in a market of 1.4 billion people like China is huge, and all durian exporting countries in Southeast Asia combined are still not enough to meet this market demand.

Meanwhile, compared to other countries in the region, Vietnamese durian exported to China has many competitive advantages in logistics and quality.
