Spontaneous activity for many years
Along a stretch of less than 300 meters along the Gianh River, passing through Van Phu village, Nam Gianh commune, three makeshift boat repair workshops have been operating for many years. Significantly, these workshops are located right next to residential areas. The fumes from paint and solvents, along with the noise of machinery generated during repairs, seriously affect the lives of the local residents.
According to observations, three boat repair workshops are located next to each other along the alluvial plain of the Gianh River, only a few dozen meters from residential areas. On average, 3-5 fishing boats are brought here daily for repair or maintenance before heading out to sea. During the repair process, especially when painting and applying sealant, chemical fumes often spread to the surrounding area.

Mr. T., a local resident, complained that the smell of paint and solvents permeates the residential area very strongly, especially during hot weather. Besides air pollution, the repair work also generates noise almost all day long, significantly affecting the lives of the surrounding residents.
Locals living near the area say these three workshops have been operating for about 15 years. Initially, the owners only utilized a portion of the riverside alluvial plain as a temporary boat repair site. However, as the demand for fishing boat repairs from local fishermen increased, the facilities gradually expanded in scale and area along the river to cover their operating space.
Strict action will be taken against violators.
Upon investigation, these three informal repair facilities were opened by local households and have been serving the repair needs of fishing boats for fishermen in the area and some neighboring regions for many years. In fact, there are no licensed boat repair facilities in Nam Gianh commune, while these informal facilities in Van Phu village partially meet the boat repair needs of local fishermen.
However, many residents are concerned that the prolonged operation of these unregulated boat repair facilities will cause environmental pollution and lead to health consequences. Residents hope that the authorities will soon inspect and implement appropriate management measures to ensure a safe living environment for the community.
According to the leaders of Nam Gianh commune People's Committee, the local authorities have also become aware of the activities of these establishments and will form inspection teams to assess their operations and take strict action in accordance with regulations.
According to Tran Thanh Tam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Gianh commune, these facilities mainly serve the repair of fishing boats for local fishermen and have been operating for many years. For the time being, the local authorities will regularly inspect and remind these facilities, and take measures to limit painting and repair activities that cause dust, unpleasant odors, and noise to avoid pollution.
"In the long term, the local authorities have a plan to allow a local enterprise to build a boat repair dock in Con Se village, meeting the needs of fishermen while ensuring compliance with legal regulations, especially environmental protection requirements," Mr. Tam added.
