Yamal becomes Barcelona's new number 10. |
After an explosive season with 18 goals and 25 assists, contributing greatly to helping Barcelona win the domestic treble (La Liga, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup) and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, Yamal left his mark as a phenomenon of European football.
With such impressive performance, Barca's board of directors did not hesitate to give him the prestigious number 10 shirt - which once belonged to famous names such as Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho and Messi.
At the solemn ceremony with president Joan Laporta, Yamal shared: "Messi made history with the number 10 shirt, I will do the same. I don't feel pressure, but grateful to continue the legacy."
Yamal could have taken the number 10 shirt from last season. However, he did not ask Barca's board to take away the number from his senior Ansu Fati.
The fact that Fati, who took the number 10 after Messi, failed to live up to expectations and is now on loan at AS Monaco, further paves the way for Yamal to become the new centrepiece of the club's long-term plans.
Also in his speech when receiving the iconic shirt number, the player born in 2007 also set a new goal: winning the Champions League and World Cup - two titles he still lacks in his collection.
