Zalo AI Summit - 8 years of growing with Vietnam in the AI era

Looking back to 2017, artificial intelligence was still a new keyword in Vietnam. Strong technology markets such as the US and China had increased investment and research in AI during this period, but for the rest of the world , “AI” was still a trendy, modern keyword rather than a tangible technology with practical applications.

However, there are still Vietnamese technology engineers who see the potential of the AI “gold mine”. In a flat world, a country that wants to develop cannot be outside the general global trend, especially in the technology industry. The AI community needs to be established, individuals who are passionate about AI need to have the opportunity to study and exchange research, AI needs to be known to the public as a practical technology field and more importantly, Vietnam needs to enter the era of artificial intelligence.

From the urgent requirements of the technology market as well as the country's development orientation, Zalo AI Summit - an annual conference connecting AI engineers and experts in Vietnam, was born. First held in 2017, Zalo AI Summit chose the theme "Vietnam in the era of artificial intelligence - Vietnam in the era of AI" - marking a transformation period of Vietnam in the technology era.

At present, when AI is familiar to Vietnamese people, AI conferences and forums are no longer strange. However, in 2017, an event like Zalo AI Summit affirmed the pioneering role of a technology unit in Vietnam, paving the way for development for the domestic AI community.

No longer a field of research that only exists abroad, from Zalo AI Summit, AI ideas are shared, lessons are recorded, AI products are introduced and perfected. After 8 years, the Vietnamese AI community has the right to be proud of the achievements in developing artificial intelligence in the country.

Zalo AI Summit seasons, sharing a common aspiration for Vietnam

In the first year of implementation, Zalo AI Summit attracted more than 230 engineers and programmers to participate, including many famous PhDs and Masters in the field of AI in both Vietnam and experts working at leading corporations and research units in the world.

Over the years, the number of people interested in watching the Zalo AI Summit event has increased, from a few hundred people directly participating in the event to thousands of people watching the program through other online streaming channels. From an event aimed at engineers and technology experts, Zalo AI Summit has attracted the attention of a large community - press agencies, university students, research and teaching teams in the field of AI, representatives of companies applying AI in business activities...

Different in work or needs, people interested in Zalo AI Summit throughout the past seasons all have the same wish and aspiration to contribute to the domestic AI industry.

In 2020, Zalo AI Summit brought the theme "Artificial Intelligence for Daily Life". Zalo AI Summit 2020 witnessed the birth of new AI products such as voice assistant Kiki Auto. After 5 years, Kiki Auto has more than 1.3 million installations and uses on cars in Vietnam, becoming one of the most widely used smart assistants on cars in Vietnam. It is estimated that one in every 5 cars running on the road in Vietnam is using Kiki Auto.

In 2023, Zalo AI Summit opened the story "In the era of Generative AI". At the event, Dr. Nguyen Truong Son, Director of Science at Zalo AI, shared the topic "The development of Large Language Models in Vietnam".

Also at the event, Zalo launched a large language model (LLM) with 7 billion parameters focusing on Vietnamese. Zalo's LLM model achieved 150% of the capacity compared to OpenAI's GPT3.5 on the VMLU Vietnamese LLM Competency Assessment Benchmark. The training time took only 6 months, shortened from the original plan of 18 months.

Not only stopping at research, Zalo gradually brings technology from the laboratory to life by commercializing and popularizing application products from LLM.

After 8 years, when Vietnam continues to consider AI development as the driving force for the country's technology development, Zalo AI Summit still retains its value not only as a pioneering event paving the way for AI conferences in Vietnam, but also as a place to create breakthrough AI ideas. The return of Zalo AI Summit 2025 promises to open up a panoramic picture of the development of artificial intelligence in Vietnam, marking a new milestone in the era of the country's technological advancement.
