Visitors to Sa Pa these days can enjoy the beauty of hydrangeas everywhere, from small gardens of homestay, hotels to corners of big ancient rose gardens. Vibrant colours of pure white, romantic purple and captivating blue have created impression in the hearts of tourists.
Hydrangeas used to be planted only in Da Lat but in recent years, they are found in Sa Pa. All-year-round cool climate and high humidity serve as ideal conditions for the flowers to bloom.
Known as “Hydrangea Hortensia” in English, the flower namederives from Greece. Hydrangea is considered a symbol of love and happiness.
To grow hydrangeas, you must first have a good flower variety and suitable soil. Seeds need to be soaked in water for one to two hours with germination time ranging from seven to 10 days.
Hydrangeas are usually planted in the fall or winter and then bloom in the spring or summer. It requiresfrequent water and fertilisersfor the best flower blooming.
Hydrangeas have many colours such as blue, purple, pink or white depending on the caring conditions and the soil’s pH level. The flowers remain their blooms for a long time, from one to two months, so they are favourite flowers of gardeners.
Hydrangeas fully cover a hill side.
Tourists should not miss visiting Sa Pa ancient rose garden located about 5km from Sa Pa Town. The garden is famous for not only brightly red roses but also a vibrant hydrangea garden where flowers are planted on a hill side.
Hydrangeas in blossom create a sparkling scene that visitors can not enjoy anywhere else.
Blooming hydrangeas on the hill side in May is such a poetic scene that touches the hearts of many tourists.
Tourists to this location can also admire thousands of rose trees of various types including more than 200 old rose genres aged over 30 years blooming all year round.
Hydrangeas are in the best blossom from April to June.
Located in an area of more than 1.5ha, the Sa Pa ancient rose garden covers the view of the surrounding forest landscape. It is where flowers of different seasons bloom vibrantly.
Pham Ngoc Long, director of Hoang Lien Sapa Community Eco-Tourism Cooperative where Sa Pa’s largest hydrangea garden is located, said “Hydrangea has been researched and planted by Sa Pa ancient rose garden in recent years.Growing this flower is easy as it is adaptable with the climate of Sa Pa town.”
“The period between April and June is the most beautiful blossom time of hydrangeas, attracting a large number of tourists to take pictures with,” he said.
Hydrangeas are loved by tourists not only because of their romantic beauty but also symbolic meanings of health, luckiness, happiness and success.
Visitors from the south, Hanoi or overseas all love locations covered by the flowers as they can engage themselves in the nature and cool fresh weather.
Nguyen Thanh Hang, a tourist from Hanoi, said “We have been lost in a vast garden of hydrangeas, enjoy cool fresh climate here and have nice photos. This is a destination that anyone who have been to Sa Pa should visit.”
Sa Pa Town owns suitable soil and climate conditions to grow these unique flowers. Local authorities said they will have solutions to encourage tourist attractions as well as local communities to grow hydrangeas, in order to create a beautiful and dreamy garden in the summer which is the peak tourism season of the town.
