3 reasons that will shock you

I'm over 60 years old and retired three years ago, but my husband passed away, so I've been living alone ever since. My monthly pension is 8 million VND, which is more than enough for someone with a simple lifestyle like me. However, living alone in old age is quite sad, so I called my children together for a family meeting to decide which child would take me in to live with them.

I also made it clear that I am still healthy and able to help my children look after the grandchildren. Each month, I will set aside 5 million VND to contribute to their food expenses. The remaining 3 million VND I save for medical expenses and supplements, so my children don't need to spend any money on it. In addition, I have a savings account worth 500 million VND; if I become seriously ill, my children can use that money for treatment, and if I pass away suddenly, it will go to the child who lives with me.

But, sadly, none of my children wanted to take me in to live with them.

My eldest child said that city life is hectic and stressful, and she feared I wouldn't be able to adapt to the noise, dust, and hustle and bustle. She worried that I would feel lonely in this unfamiliar urban environment, where neighbors rarely have the time to chat and share like they do back home.

My second child argued that, even though I help care for the children and contribute to their monthly food expenses, having an elderly person in the house would require more consideration of space and time. She's busy with work and worried she won't be able to dedicate enough time to caring for me properly, fearing I'll feel neglected and that I'll develop unnecessary anxieties about the children. That would only make things more difficult.

My third child, however, had a different opinion. He said I should stay in the countryside, where I had kind neighbors, fresh air, and a small garden I always loved. He believed that changing my living environment in old age would negatively impact my health, and he didn't want me to give up my daily pleasures like gardening and socializing with neighbors – things I still did every day.

I understand and appreciate my children's feelings, but deep down, I can't help but feel sad and lonely. At this age, I long to be closer to my children and grandchildren, to live and share meals, joys, and sorrows every day. Perhaps I need to think of another way to live with them. I don't want them to receive the news from the neighbors when I pass away; will they regret it then?
