3 Vietnamese films top the domestic box office.

Việt NamViệt Nam02/09/2024

This past weekend was a rare occasion in recent years when three Vietnamese films topped the box office, and it wasn't during the Lunar New Year holiday.

According to statistics from The Box Office Vietnam, with revenue exceeding 24.5 billion VND over the three-day weekend (total revenue of 33 billion VND to date), "Making Money with Ghosts" is leading the Vietnamese box office.

"Making a Fortune with Ghosts," directed by Nguyen Nhat Trung (Trung Lun), features a cast including Hoai Linh, Tuan Tran, Diep Bao Ngoc, Le Giang, Quang Minh, and others. The film tells the story of Lanh (played by Tuan Tran), a reckless and rebellious young man who gets involved in gambling and accumulates debt.

While on the run from aggressive gangsters and creditors, he accidentally encounters the ghost woman Na (Diep Bao Ngoc) and is asked to help her find her child whom she was separated from since birth. In return, she will use her psychic powers to help him "get rich"...

Compared to previous years' September 2nd holiday releases, the revenue of "Making Money with Ghosts" is very impressive. Released on September 2nd last year, "The Anonymous" grossed 18 billion VND, while "Island of the Living Dead" in 2022 only earned nearly 12.8 billion VND.

Coming in second at the box office last weekend was the film "Hai Muoi". This film was released rather hastily, just one month after its public introduction, and it didn't receive much media attention. Earning over 15.4 billion VND after its first weekend is a fairly good figure for artist Quyen Linh's return to cinema after 19 years.

Meanwhile, "Ma Da" (Ghost) maintained its momentum, earning an additional 5.2 billion VND. The film's total revenue has now reached 120 billion VND. Without the release of "Making Money with Ghosts" and "Hai Muoi," The Box Office Vietnam predicts "Ma Da" could have easily surpassed the revenue of "Dat Rung Phuong Nam" (140 billion VND). However, given the current situation, the film is likely to end its theatrical run with a total revenue of around 125-130 billion VND.

Based on this year's box office results, the four-day National Day holiday on September 2nd appears to be a favorable time for releasing Vietnamese films, as people have a long holiday break and the hype surrounding Hollywood summer blockbusters has cooled down.

According to The Box Office Vietnam, there aren't many blockbuster films being released between now and the end of September. This presents a great opportunity for "Making Money with Ghosts," "Hai Muoi," and "Ma Da" to continue accumulating revenue.

Given the current situation, the film "Cám" will consider early screenings/special screenings before its official release date of September 27th, as there are not many strong competitors at the box office this month.
