Many experts have previously commented on the potential of AI for automating tasks. In a recent interview, Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, a well-known American company famous for its customer relationship management software platform, spoke again about this controversial trend.
“AI is doing 30-50% of the work at Salesforce,” Benioff shared in an interview on The Circuit with Emily Chang. The work he referred to includes functions and positions such as software engineers and customer service representatives. He also stated that the internal application of AI has helped the company hire fewer personnel.
This San Francisco-based company is focused on selling an AI product capable of handling tasks such as customer service without human supervision. Benioff said the tool's accuracy is around 93%, even when serving large clients like Walt Disney.
"We all need to get used to the idea that AI can do things that we used to do ourselves," Benioff said. He argued that this allows us to move on to higher-value jobs.
In the 2000s, Salesforce revolutionized software sales by providing customer management tools over the internet. Now, as the technology industry shifts towards AI, Benioff is working to maintain Salesforce's leadership by integrating this new technology across the entire platform.
Beyond him, tech leaders are increasingly speaking out about the potential of artificial intelligence to replace human labor. Executives at Microsoft and Alphabet have stated that AI is generating around 30% of new software code in some projects.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic and developer of Claude AI, also commented on the prospect of AI eliminating half of office jobs. He warned politicians and business owners to stop "sugar-coating" mass layoffs and to be honest with workers about the real threat posed by AI.
“Cancer is cured, the economy grows 10% annually, the budget is balanced, but 20% of the population is unemployed,” Amodei said. This figure is a record high because even severe macroeconomic imbalances like Covid would only result in 7-8% unemployment.
Many experts, such as Sam Altman and Geoffrey Hinton, have warned that if general artificial intelligence (AGI) becomes a reality, it could be a turning point for humanity. However, the technology is still in the narrow AI stage, excelling at specific tasks but not yet reaching the level of human understanding and thinking.
