Many experts have previously commented on the potential of AI to automate jobs. In a recent interview, Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, an American company famous for its customer relationship management software platform, spoke about this controversial trend.
“AI is doing 30 to 50 percent of the work at Salesforce,” Benioff said in an interview on The Circuit with Emily Chang. That includes roles like software engineering and customer service. He also said that using AI internally has helped the company hire fewer people.
The San Francisco-based company is focused on selling an AI product that can handle tasks like customer service without human supervision. Benioff said the tool has about 93% accuracy, even when serving big clients like Walt Disney.
“We all have to get used to the idea that AI can do things that we used to do,” said Mr. Benioff, who argued that this would allow us to move on to higher-value work.
Salesforce revolutionized software sales in the 2000s by offering customer management tools over the Internet. Now, as the tech industry shifts toward AI, Benioff is working to keep Salesforce ahead by integrating the new technology into the entire platform.
Beyond him, tech leaders have become increasingly vocal about the potential of artificial intelligence to replace human labor. Executives at Microsoft and Alphabet have said AI is generating about 30 percent of new software code in some projects.
Claude AI developer Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, also commented on the prospect of AI eliminating half of office jobs. He warned politicians and business owners to stop “glossing” mass layoffs and be honest with workers about the existential threat of AI.
“Cancer is cured, the economy is growing 10% a year, the budget is balanced, but 20% of people are unemployed,” Amodei said. That’s a record high because even severe macroeconomic imbalances like Covid will only result in 7-8% unemployment.
Many experts such as Sam Altman and Geoffrey Hinton have warned that if artificial general intelligence (AGI) becomes a reality, it could be a turning point for humanity. However, the technology is still in the narrow AI stage, good at specific tasks but not reaching the level of understanding and thinking like humans.
