Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets will retire after the 2025 MLS Cup. |
Inter Miami defeated Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 at Chase Stadium, securing a historic MLS Cup victory. This was Messi's 44th major title, many of which he won alongside Alba and Busquets at Barcelona. It was also the final match of the Spanish duo's careers.
Messi told ESPN : "This is very special because we all came here from the beginning. The goal was to win this title, a title that is important for the development of the club. I'm really happy that they could say goodbye in this way. They are close friends, and I'm grateful to have played alongside them for almost my entire career."
Alba and Busquets joined Inter Miami alongside Messi in the summer of 2023. The trio immediately won the league's first-ever Leagues Cup, before winning the Supporters' Shield and setting a record for points scored in an MLS season. In November 2024, Javier Mascherano – another former Barcelona player – was appointed head coach of Miami.
Mascherano emphasized the significance of this championship: "It's a joy to say goodbye to two football legends in the most fitting way. They made history at this club, contributing to a complete transformation of the team alongside Messi. Although Inter Miami's history is short, they have become an important part of it."
Busquets ended his illustrious career, leaving behind a legacy of a unique "number 5" who completely changed the way we viewed the role of the modern defensive midfielder. Meanwhile, Alba is considered an outstanding left-back of Spain's golden generation of football.
