According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in New York, on December 2nd, the e-commerce giant Amazon launched a new line of artificial intelligence (AI) chips, marking the latest move by the technology giant to challenge the world's leading chip manufacturer Nvidia by offering customized chips that can handle certain AI tasks at a lower cost.
The new chip is called Trainium3. Servers equipped with this chip operate up to four times faster and are more energy-efficient than previous generations of Nvidia chips.
Speaking at the company's annual re:Invent event on the same day, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman said: "Trainium is now a multi-billion dollar business and is still growing very rapidly."
The tech giant also announced it is developing the next-generation AI chip, Trainium4. This chip will be designed to be compatible with Nvidia's NVLink Fusion networking technology – a key technology used to connect chips in AI server racks.
Amazon is one of several Nvidia customers who have developed their own AI chips. Earlier in November, Google also announced its latest generation of TPU Ironwood AI chips.
Google is reportedly in negotiations to supply technology company Meta (META) with billions of dollars worth of TPUs, in addition to its recent multi-billion dollar deal with AI company Anthropic.
Besides Google, Microsoft is also moving towards relying on its own custom chips instead of Nvidia's, although the company is experiencing delays in developing its own chips.
Over the past year, Amazon has aggressively expanded its custom AI hardware. Recently, the company completed a massive AI data center project, dubbed Project Rainier.
Anthropic, an AI developer and competitor of OpenAI, expects to use 1 million custom chips from Amazon's project and other data centers by the end of 2025.
A key advantage of Amazon's chips is their cost. Analysts say these chips are significantly cheaper than Nvidia's, and AI developers using Amazon chips can save 30%-40% on costs.
