Is Amorim not good enough to manage MU?

Former Manchester United legend Jamie Carragher sparked controversy by publicly criticizing manager Ruben Amorim following the 1-1 draw between Manchester United and Leeds United in the 20th round of the Premier League on January 4th.

It all started with the post-match press conference, where Amorim expressed his dissatisfaction with his superiors and questioned the direction of the management at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old coach insisted he would continue working his way until his contract expires in 18 months, while also taking a jab at the scouting department, Sporting Director Jason Wilcox, and even former captain Gary Neville – who frequently criticized him in his role as a commentator.

Reacting to these statements, Carragher was particularly upset when commenting on Sky Sports . The former Liverpool center-back bluntly stated that Amorim "is not competent" to manage Manchester United, even going so far as to say he "is only just good enough to be a Premier League manager."

Specifically, Carragher stated: “In my opinion, there are only two possibilities for this reaction: either Amorim is unhappy with the January 2026 transfer window because he feels unsupported, or those at the top are questioning his constant changes to the tactical system.”

According to the former Liverpool defender, there was a time when MU "looked like they were improving when they switched to a four-man defense," but Amorim reverted to playing with five defenders against Wolves. Carragher believes that was one of the Red Devils' worst performances of the season.

"Amorim isn't good enough to be Manchester United's manager," Carragher emphasized. "The reality is that almost any manager in the Premier League right now can look at Manchester United and think they would have gotten far more points than that."

After 20 rounds, MU is currently 5th in the Premier League table with 31 points. This past summer, the team spent a staggering £225 million on transfers, bringing in a host of notable names such as Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Bryan Mbeumo. For Carragher, that's enough to refute the notion that Amorim lacks support.

“He had a lot of support. With his poor performance last season, MU even had every reason to part ways with Amorim in the summer,” Carragher concluded.

A stunning goal helped MU beat Newcastle. In the early hours of December 27th, Patrick Dorgu executed a beautiful one-touch volley to give MU a 1-0 victory over Newcastle in the 18th round of the Premier League.
