According to the plan, the new university group will become the third largest higher education institution in the UK. Currently, the two sides are consulting on the possibility of renaming it the University Group of London and the South East, although each university will retain its original name and operate as a separate academic faculty. Students will still apply, study, and graduate from the university of their choice.
Professor Jane Harrington, Chancellor of Greenwich University, will assume the role of Chancellor-designate of the merged group. All staff from both universities will be recruited as a single entity, with a unified board of directors and executive team.
According to the plan, announced in September 2025, the merger of the two universities is "a model for other institutions to follow." According to Ms. Harrington, the consolidation will help maintain world- class teaching quality, promote research that addresses practical problems, and create new opportunities through resource sharing.
This event takes place against the backdrop of increasing financial pressure on UK higher education. The Student Services Office warns that nearly 45% of universities risk budget deficits in the 2024-2025 academic year. In this context, the leaders of the two universities believe that the “mega-university” model will provide a more solid financial foundation to overcome economic challenges and continue serving the community.
