On April 13 (local time), US President Donald Trump confirmed that he would impose tariffs on phones, computers, chips, and some other popular electronic devices. This announcement came just two days after his administration exempted many devices from the tariffs applied globally, including those from China.

Trump and his aides believe the exemption is only temporary, while the government prepares various import tariffs specifically for critical technologies.

According to the New York Times , the administration is expected to take its first step toward tariffs next week by launching an investigation to determine the impact of semiconductor imports on national security.

"No one can get out of this situation," Trump said on social media. The US president hinted at the broad scope of the investigation, stating that the administration would "look at semiconductors and the entire electronics supply chain."

According to Bloomberg , this move could last for weeks, even months. Until then, smartphones, computers, and chips will remain exempt from tariffs. This also provides an opportunity for companies and lobbying groups to negotiate with the government.

Speaking on ABC , U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that Trump could announce new tariffs in the next one to two months, targeting not only semiconductors but also imported pharmaceuticals.

On CNN 's State of the Union program, Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council, stated that there are “always instances” where certain high-tech imports will be subject to separate tariffs, distinct from the tariffs applied broadly to other countries.

"Semiconductors are a key component in many defense devices. I don't think this move is surprising," Hassett added.

Previously, the list of tax-exempt devices appeared in the import guidelines of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Some of the exempted products included computers, smartphones, modems, flash drives, etc.

Analysts consider this a "victory" for Apple and other major American tech companies that rely on factories in China for manufacturing and assembly.

According to sources close to the matter, Apple executives have even contacted White House officials about the tariff situation with China in recent days. The company declined to comment.

Semiconductors have been on the tariff exemption list since April 2nd. However, the rapid changes in tariffs are causing difficulties for businesses.

According to the New York Times , the possibility of higher tariffs on chips is likely to "cast another cloud of fog" over the technology industry, even as lobbying groups representing Intel and Nvidia continue to urge the administration to sign an agreement to lower trade barriers.

"The chaos stemming from the news coming from the White House has stunned the tech industry and investors, creating significant uncertainty for companies trying to plan their supply chains, inventories, and demand," said analyst Dan Ives from Wedbush Securities.

The narrative about rising prices for tech products in the US continues to be discussed. For Apple, tariff announcements caused its market capitalization to drop by $770 billion . American consumers even rushed to buy iPhones out of fear that trade conflicts could drive up product prices.
