Following the draw for the 2026 World Cup on the morning of December 6th, many believe that Group I is the "group of death" of the tournament, as it includes France, Senegal, Norway, and the winner of play-off 2 (Bolivia, Suriname, or Iraq).
As soon as the results were announced, social media exploded with comments stating that Group I was theoretically the toughest challenge. The biggest reason stemmed from the highly anticipated attacking showdown between Mbappe and Haaland.
Both superstar strikers are in impressive form. Haaland continues his fearsome goal-scoring record for Manchester City and the national team, while Mbappe shines at Real Madrid and remains a key player for the French national team. The 25-year-old star won the 2018 World Cup and played a spectacular final in 2022, although France lost to Argentina.

One fan commented: “France is definitely in the group of death. Mbappe was unlucky, but they still have enough strength to win everything. At least we’ll have a Mbappe-Haaland showdown for the Ballon d’Or.” Another account shared: “France vs. Norway is the highlight of the group stage. Add Senegal and it truly is the group of death.”
Senegal, the 2021 CAN champions, continue to be considered a top representative of African football. They reached the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup and the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup. With Sadio Mane and a generation of experienced players, the West African team will certainly be a tough challenge for both France and Norway.
Although the 2026 World Cup is still almost a year away, Group I has already become the focus of attention, promising thrilling matches and an iconic clash between Mbappe and Haaland.
