Racing against time to fight for life.
The first case involved a 72-year-old male patient residing in Dong Van , Ninh Binh. The patient suddenly developed difficulty speaking and hemiplegia and was taken by his family to the emergency room at Bach Mai Hospital's Ninh Binh facility.

Upon receiving the patient, Dr. Vuong Xuan Trung, from the Stroke Center - Bach Mai Hospital's Ninh Binh branch, and his team quickly activated the stroke alert procedure, conducted clinical assessments, performed tests, and performed diagnostic imaging. The results confirmed that the patient had an acute ischemic stroke due to occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery.
Recognizing this as a case requiring urgent revascularization, Dr. Vuong Xuan Trung and his team immediately administered intravenous thrombolytic therapy. The medication was given just 25 minutes after admission. Simultaneously, the Stroke Center, in collaboration with the Interventional Radiology Center, performed mechanical thrombectomy, with the entire process from admission to femoral artery puncture taking only 40 minutes.
Following the intervention, the patient showed significant neurological improvement, reduced paralysis, and decreased speech impairment compared to the time of admission.
The second case involves a 65-year-old male patient residing in Liem Ha, Ninh Binh. After waking up, the patient experienced difficulty speaking and signs of weakness on one side of his body. His family immediately took him to Bach Mai Hospital's Ninh Binh branch.

Recognizing this as a case of stroke while awake, and to assess the possibility of reperfusion therapy, the on-call team ordered a cranial MRI and applied the DWI/FLAIR mismatch criteria on the MRI scan. The results confirmed the patient had a right hemisphere cerebral infarction and was still indicated for thrombolytic therapy.
Just 25 minutes after admission, the patient received thrombolytic therapy. Following treatment, neurological symptoms improved significantly, and motor and language abilities progressed positively.

Sharing about the two cases, Dr. Vuong Xuan Trung said that in both cases, family members brought the patients to the hospital very early after symptoms appeared. In stroke treatment, every minute that passes results in damage to millions of brain cells. Bringing patients to the hospital early allows doctors enough time to assess the situation, prescribe the correct treatment method, and implement revascularization within the "golden hour." This is the most important factor determining the patient's recovery.
Bringing modern stroke emergency care techniques closer to the people.
Professor Mai Duy Ton, Director of the Stroke Center at Bach Mai Hospital, stated that the treatment results of the two patients showed that the stroke emergency procedures at the Ninh Binh facility had been implemented synchronously according to the standards of the Stroke Center at Bach Mai Hospital.

He added that stroke cases occurring while awake previously often missed treatment opportunities. However, with the application of magnetic resonance imaging and the DWI/FLAIR mismatch criteria, doctors can now select the right patients with salvageable brain regions for reperfusion therapy, expanding treatment opportunities for many patients.
Commenting on the first emergency cases at the new facility, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that this was not only a professional success but also affirmed the synchronized operational capacity of Bach Mai Hospital's Ninh Binh facility right from its early days of operation.
"Stroke is a disease where every minute is crucial. When patients reach the stroke center in the shortest possible time, receive an accurate diagnosis, and undergo timely intervention, their chances of recovery increase significantly. The two successful treatments in the early days of operation show that people in Ninh Binh and neighboring provinces can now access modern stroke emergency techniques locally, without having to travel to Hanoi as before," said Associate Professor Dr. Dao Xuan Co.
Also on its opening day, June 26th, Bach Mai Hospital's Ninh Binh branch performed its first surgery, saving the life of a 65-year-old male patient who had fallen from a height of 2 meters, resulting in severe spinal cord injury and the risk of paralysis in both legs if not surgically treated promptly.
Dr. Nguyen Duc Hoang, Deputy Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Spine Surgery at Bach Mai Hospital's Ninh Binh branch, emphasized that the decisive factor in the success of the surgery was that the patient was brought to the hospital very early after the accident and underwent surgery within the "golden time".
