Prosecuted for sophisticated hacking

Many hacker attacks involve sophisticated methods.

Mr. Westbrook was arrested in England and faces related civil charges from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The U.S. Department of Justice is now seeking his extradition on charges of securities fraud, wire fraud, and five counts of computer fraud.

Authorities said Westbrook accessed executives' email accounts between January 2019 and May 2020 and used the non-publicly disclosed information to buy stocks and profit.

Mr. Westbrook is alleged to have used anonymous email accounts, VPN services, and bitcoin to conceal his wrongdoing. The charges of securities fraud and wire fraud both carry a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
