Toy Story dominates the box office.
Toy Story 5 is dominating the box office with an opening weekend of $160 million from 4,425 theaters in North America, officially becoming the biggest domestic opening of 2026, surpassing Super Mario Galaxy Movie. by Universal ($131.7 million).
Internationally, as of the evening of June 21st, Toy Story 5 had grossed $152 million, bringing its global revenue to $312 million in its opening week. The film had a production budget of $250 million, not including marketing costs.

With positive reviews from critics (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences (an A rating on CinemaScore), the film is predicted to continue being a top choice for families in the coming months.
In China alone, the film accounted for approximately 30% of the box office market and became the MPA's second-largest animated film debut since 2020, second only to Zootopia 2 .
Is the age of toys over?
In Toy Story 5 , a new theme emerges, both haunting and relevant to the times—the disappearance of childhood games.
Eight-year-old Bonnie still plays with Jessie and her pony, Bullseye. However, she can't make friends with the other kids in the neighborhood. The reason is simple: nobody plays with toys anymore. Everyone is glued to their screens. The film views the invasion of technology as a turning point that completely changes how children connect with each other.
"The age of toys is over!" a worn-out, forgotten toy lamented in despair.
As if surrendering to that reality, Bonnie's parents bought her a children's tablet called Lilypad, designed with a green frog-shaped frame. Bonnie was quickly captivated when she discovered she could instantly make friends through online chats.
In just 15 minutes, the little girl had a date to meet a new friend.

The arrival of the Lilypad technology makes the toys feel threatened like never before. In the eyes of Woody and his friends, it symbolizes a new world that is gradually replacing the role of traditional toys.
Initially, Lilypad helped Bonnie connect with the other girls in the dance group she was in. But things quickly became complicated as Bonnie began to experience the familiar social pressures of the digital age: peer groups, the fear of isolation, and the ridicule in online chats.
Bonnie was spending more and more time in front of screens and drifting away from the toys she used to play with. For Woody and Buzz, that was a warning sign.
Before long, Bonnie's new group of friends—eight-year-old girls of the social media age—mocked Bonnie for still being attached to toys.
Director Andrew Stanton, who previously helmed the successful Wall-E, took the helm of a Toy Story film for the first time, creating an ambitious, multi-layered production.

Instead of building the story as a simple confrontation between good, represented by toys, and evil, represented by technology screens, Toy Story 5 doesn't view technology as an enemy. The film sees it as a new dimension within the universe of childhood.
The plot is complex, but ultimately it boils down to a very simple goal: Jessie and her team try to arrange for Bonnie and other children connected to the real world to play together.
The main storyline, revolving around Lilypad and Bonnie's growing reliance on the screen, is topical and clearly well-intentioned. However, the film still reveals weaknesses in its lack of unexpected twists.
The film quickly reveals crucial emotional turning points, making it easy for viewers to predict the story's development. While the themes of friendship in the digital age are very relevant, the ending feels inevitable from quite early on.
The film repeatedly raises the question of whether traditional toys and new technology can coexist, but it doesn't really challenge or delve deeply into the issue.
Meanwhile, the parallel storyline revolving around Buzz Lightyear's group trapped in a product demonstration mode is more compelling. Buzz Lightyear drifts aimlessly, searching for meaning in his existence.
The film explores the purpose of a toy's existence far more deeply than the main storyline. The notion that toys are created solely for children is gradually viewed from a darker perspective, encompassing concepts such as obsolescence, abandonment, and the silent fear of being stored away and forgotten forever.
In particular, the segments revolving around loneliness and waiting offer a rare contemplative nuance. These are rather heavy themes for a children's film, but they are also something that Toy Story has touched upon many times before.
It is in these philosophical moments that Toy Story 5 comes alive. Buzz Lightyear's storyline reveals the potential for a deeper work, where identity is no longer limited by pre-programmed functions.
Conversely, the central story between Jessie and Bonnie, while more relatable, is rather safe, following the brand's familiar pattern of separation, misunderstanding, and reunion.
Billion-dollar brands are still popular.
Nevertheless, Toy Story 5 is still a well-made and captivating film. Pixar's veteran director Andrew Stanton maintains the coherent storytelling and emotional delivery that are the strengths of the franchise.
Toy Story 5 derives its weight from its core idea. The film shows that play is not just a form of entertainment, but also a way for children to learn about the world.
The voice cast continues to excel in their roles, while Randy Newman's music delivers familiar emotions associated with the franchise, balancing nostalgia with freshness.

The supporting characters enrich the film's world, although no new faces have yet achieved the same level of influence as those who appeared in previous installments.
Overall, Toy Story 5 succeeded more as a continuation of a familiar universe than as a bold departure for the franchise. The film possessed enough warmth, humor, and sincerity to please long-time audiences, but rarely delivered surprises and often reverted to familiar storytelling formulas.
The box office success of Toy Story 5 also shows that the franchise is still very strong.
