In his resignation letter to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on August 31, Wallace wrote: “The UK Ministry of Defence is on its way back to world-class service with world-class people. The United Kingdom is respected worldwide for our armed forces and that respect has increased even more since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out.”

According to The Guardian, Prime Minister Sunak praised Wallace, stating that the official was leaving office with "thanks and respect" from the head of government .
Wallace, a close ally of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, played a key role in Britain's response to the crisis in Ukraine. In May, Britain became the first Western country to deliver Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles, as requested by Kyiv to bolster its counter-offensive against Russian forces.
Last month, Wallace announced he would step down in the next cabinet reshuffle, ending his four-year tenure as head of the UK Ministry of Defence. Prime Minister Sunak is expected to appoint Wallace's replacement later on August 31.
According to the Daily Telegraph , Secretary of State for the Armed Forces James Heappey, Deputy Treasury Secretary John Glen, and former Defence Secretary Liam Fox are among the potential candidates to succeed Wallace.
