Iranian football and the question mark surrounding the World Cup.

VHO - The prospect of the Iranian national team failing to qualify for this summer's World Cup is becoming a real possibility, as escalating tensions between Iran and the United States directly impact the sporting life of this Middle Eastern nation.

Recent statements by the President of the Football Federation of Iran (FFIRI), Mehdi Taj, have raised concerns not only among Iranian fans but also within FIFA and the international football community.

In an interview on Tehran state television, Mehdi Taj admitted that the Iranian national team might not qualify for the World Cup, despite having officially secured their place in the Asian qualifying rounds. “Given what is happening today and the attack from the US, it is difficult to be optimistic about the possibility of participating in the World Cup. The final decision rests with the sports administrators,” the FFIRI president said.

Iran secured their place in the World Cup in March 2025, marking their fourth consecutive appearance at the world's biggest football tournament. According to the draw, the Asian representative is in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt. Iran's three group stage matches are all scheduled to be played in the United States in June.

Specifically, Iran will face New Zealand on June 15th and Belgium on June 21st in Los Angeles, before concluding the group stage with a match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26th. From a purely sporting perspective, this is considered a challenging group, but one that is not beyond the capabilities of Iran, one of the powerhouses of Asian football and currently ranked in the top 20 of the FIFA rankings.

However, professional considerations are being overshadowed by an increasingly complex political and security landscape. Escalating geopolitical tensions between Iran and the US, particularly following recent military actions, have made travel, safety, and diplomatic relations major obstacles to the Iranian team's participation in the tournament held in the US.

Not only the World Cup, but also Iranian domestic football is directly affected. Mehdi Taj confirmed that the Iranian national league has been postponed indefinitely due to the unstable security situation. This is a rare decision, reflecting the severity of the current crisis.

In light of developments in Iran, FIFA is being cautious. FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom said the organization is closely monitoring the situation and it is too early to comment in detail. “I read the news this morning, just like you. We’ve had a meeting and it’s too early to comment specifically, but FIFA will be closely monitoring developments around the world ,” Grafstrom said on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in Cardiff, Wales.

The head of FIFA's executive body emphasized that the organization's focus is on ensuring a safe World Cup, with the full participation of all qualifying teams. “We held the draw for the finals with all teams present. FIFA’s goal is a safe World Cup. We will continue to communicate with the three host governments as usual. Everyone will be safe,” said Grafstrom.

The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. In this context, the possibility of a team being unable to play in the US due to political and security reasons puts FIFA in a difficult position, caught between pure sporting principles and unavoidable practical considerations.

In the event that Iran is forced to withdraw, FIFA is reportedly considering alternative options. The UAE has been mentioned as a potential candidate, although their qualifying performance is not superior to Iraq's. Another scenario is that Iraq will replace Iran in the finals, while the UAE participates in the intercontinental play-off.

Each option raises questions about fairness and precedent. Replacing a qualifying team with another for non-football-related reasons is a sensitive situation, requiring FIFA to carefully consider its options to avoid prolonged controversy. Throughout World Cup history, there have been numerous instances of politics impacting sport, but each such instance has had lasting consequences for FIFA's credibility and coordinating role. The Iran issue, therefore, is not just a matter of one team, but a test of the governing capacity of the world's largest football organization.

The possibility of Iran not qualifying for the World Cup, if it happens, would be a huge shock to the country's fans. For decades, football has been one of the few fields that has helped Iran maintain a positive presence on the international map, bringing pride and connection to the outside world.

Conversely, the World Cup is also seen as a rare space where nations can compete on the pitch instead of on the battlefield. The absence of a national team due to geopolitical tensions raises questions about the ability of sport to act as a "bridge" in an increasingly polarized world.

Currently, no official decision has been made. FIFA continues to monitor the situation, while the Iranian Football Federation and the country's sports governing bodies face a difficult choice between sporting interests and safety and political considerations. Whatever the outcome, Iran's story shows that the World Cup is not just a football festival, but also a clear reflection of the upheavals of the contemporary world.
