Nearly 9,000 cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease have been reported nationwide.

In the first five months of 2023, the whole country recorded 8,995 cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease; including 3 deaths; the Ministry of Health requested strengthening measures for receiving and treating patients.

The Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health ) has just sent an urgent document to the Departments of Health in provinces and cities, and medical facilities, requesting them to strengthen the treatment of hand, foot, and mouth disease as the epidemic is increasing.

Accordingly, in the first five months of 2023, the whole country recorded 8,995 cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease in 63 provinces and cities; including 3 deaths in Dak Lak, Kien Giang, and Long An. Compared to the same period in 2022, the number of cases decreased by 28%, but the number of deaths increased by 2 cases. The South recorded the highest number of cases (6,204 cases); followed by the North (2,007 cases); Central Highlands (656 cases); and the Central Highlands (130 cases).

To minimize the number of deaths from hand, foot, and mouth disease, the Ministry of Health requires units to develop and implement plans for the prevention and control of hand, foot, and mouth disease in their respective areas; to inspect and evaluate human resources, facilities, medical equipment, medicines, chemicals, and medical supplies at affiliated medical examination and treatment facilities to ensure readiness to receive and treat hand, foot, and mouth disease.

Medical units should intensify monitoring of inpatients with hand, foot, and mouth disease at healthcare facilities, especially during holidays and weekends, to detect and treat cases promptly when they worsen; maintain complete and detailed medical records, detect early signs of illness, organize consultations, and refer patients to higher-level facilities in a timely manner when their condition becomes abnormal.

The Departments of Health direct, inspect, and supervise medical facilities in admitting and treating patients according to the Ministry of Health's guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hand, foot, and mouth disease. Simultaneously, they strengthen infection prevention measures within hospitals; establish a tiered treatment system; organize screening and classification of outpatient and inpatient patients according to the hand, foot, and mouth disease management protocol; and reinforce resources for intensive care units at the provincial level.

The Ministry of Health requests that provincial and city health departments advise and submit to the People's Committees of provinces and cities measures to strengthen the prevention and control of hand, foot, and mouth disease; communication efforts; and ensure sufficient equipment, medicines, chemicals, and medical supplies to meet treatment requirements.

The Ministry of Health also instructed the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, the Central Pediatric Hospital, Hue Central General Hospital, Children's Hospital 1, Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City Children's Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases, and provincial hospitals for tropical diseases to review the conditions regarding human resources, facilities, medical equipment, medicines, chemicals, and medical supplies at hand, foot, and mouth disease treatment units to receive severe cases transferred from medical facilities in the province and other provinces.

At the same time, the units intensified their efforts in directing training and organizing emergency response teams, ready to provide professional support to provinces according to their assigned areas and when assistance is requested.
