Weekend coffee: A genuine need.

Over the past weekend, numerous artistic activities for children took place nationwide, especially in the two major cultural centers of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

In Hanoi , the biggest highlights include the musical "Without a Family" (Youth Theatre) based on the literary masterpiece of the same name; the comedy circus show "You'll Laugh Even If You Don't Want to" based on the folk tale "Nghêu - sò - ốc - hến" (Vietnam Circus Federation); the children's play "The Dragon Returns" inspired by the captivating comic book series "Dragon Ball" (Vietnam National Drama Theatre); and the children's book fair with the theme "Good Books for Kids - Welcoming a Joyful Summer" (Dinh Ti Books)...

In the field of theater alone, in Ho Chi Minh City, the efforts of art theaters in creating a series of theatrical works for children are noteworthy, such as IDECAF with the 36th part of the "Once Upon a Time" series titled "Descendants of the Sun God"; Theater 5B and Truong Hung Minh Theater with a series of works: "The Big-Nose Princess and the Meow Meow Kingdom", "The White Fang Tribe"...

In the context of children's entertainment , which is constantly shifting amidst the "digital trend" with its inherent dangers, the creation of programs specifically for children by art organizations, incorporating messages about morality, character development, and fostering positive ideals and a love for art, is commendable. The crucial element is the positive response from children when they are introduced to art. Facing theatrical works that may be new to many children, especially sophisticated and less easily understood forms like musicals, children have the opportunity to become acquainted with art – the first step in their journey of accessing, familiarizing themselves with, understanding, and loving it, ultimately developing a need to appreciate it.

It is a long, difficult, but rewarding journey for children's growth, one that cannot be accomplished solely through summer programs specifically for children. Children's genuine need for artistic appreciation can only be formed if they have regular opportunities to engage with art, not just stage performances, but also film, literature, and fine arts. These opportunities and needs must be met and nurtured not only during the summer or on Children's Day (June 1st), but throughout their memorable childhood.
