Treatment methods for ptosis (drooping eyelid)

Ptosis is a condition where the upper eyelid droops lower than its normal position, partially or completely obscuring the pupil, affecting both aesthetics and vision. This is a common condition in both children and adults, and can be congenital or acquired after eye trauma, complications after eye surgery, or neuromuscular disorders.

According to Dr. Vu Thi Minh, a specialist at Hanoi Eye Hospital - Dong Nai , Tam Hiep Ward, Dong Nai Province: In children, if ptosis is not detected and treated early, children are at risk of amblyopia, strabismus, or limited vision.

According to Dr. Minh, depending on the severity of ptosis and its cause, doctors will choose the appropriate treatment method for each patient. In particular, medication is used in cases of ptosis caused by systemic diseases such as myasthenia gravis or neurological disorders. Patients will be prescribed medication to control the underlying condition, along with monitoring of the eyelid condition. This is only a temporary solution and does not completely resolve ptosis caused by mechanical factors.

Additionally, certain corrective eyewear devices with attached eyelid lifts can be used to help patients improve their vision, often applied when patients are not eligible for surgery or prefer a temporary solution.

Eyelid surgery is currently the most effective treatment method, especially for congenital and severe ptosis. Common techniques include: shortening the levator muscle (for patients with functional levator muscles, helping to shorten the muscle and raise the eyelid higher); and suspending the eyelid to the frontal muscle (applied when the levator muscle is weak or non-functional. The doctor uses sutures or biological materials to suspend the eyelid to the frontal muscle, allowing the eye to open through the movement of the frontal muscle). In complex cases, doctors may combine several techniques to achieve both aesthetic and functional visual results.

Dr. Minh advises: Patients with drooping eyelids should not self-medicate or use folk remedies as they are ineffective and may even damage the eyes. Treatment requires examination and diagnosis by an ophthalmologist to determine the exact cause and develop an appropriate treatment plan. This will help patients regain their clear vision and greater confidence in life.
