On June 7, Cambodia's Ministry of Transport and Public Works held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a highway linking the capital Phnom Penh with Bavet city (Svay Rieng province), adjacent to the Vietnamese border. The event took place at Dei Edth hamlet, Dei Edth commune, Kien Svay district (Kandal province) under the chairmanship of Prime Minister of Royal Cambodia Samdech Techo Hun Sen; with Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Vuong Van Thien (Wang Wentian); along with many high-ranking Cambodian officials, international guests and a large number of local people.
The Phnom Penh - Bavet expressway project has a total length of 135,1 km, along with 3,7 km of roads for bridge works across rivers and canals, with a total investment of 1,35 billion USD, implemented in the form of build - operate - transfer (BOT) with a 50-year operation period, of which 20% is invested by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), the remaining 80% is borrowed from the company.
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Hun Sen emphasized that this is a very important connection route and is also part of the implementation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) highway project under the previous initiative, Prime Minister Hun Sen affirmed: "Cambodia has realized the connection of the ASEAN highway project through the connection with Vietnam, between Phnom Penh city and Ho Chi Minh City and between Thailand".
According to Cambodian Minister of Transport and Public Works Sun Chanthol, along with the above project, the Royal Cambodian Government has decided to invest 232,58 million USD in building a bridge across the Mekong River connecting Dei Edth commune, Kien Svay district, with Thmor Kor commune, Lvea Em district (Kandal province) through Ring Road 3 and connecting the Phnom Penh - Bavet highway project. Both projects are under the same contractor CRBC, expected to be completed in 2027, after 48 months of construction.
