Underlying medical conditions need to be checked regularly.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên04/09/2023

On September 2nd, a video circulated on social media showing a driver in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City, suddenly collapsing and experiencing a seizure affecting the left side of his body, with his eyes and head turning to the right. The seizure lasted about a minute. The driver managed to stop the vehicle in time.

The bus driver suffered a stroke while driving. Regular check-ups for underlying medical conditions are needed.

Passengers on the bus called the 115 emergency center, but by the time the ambulance arrived, the driver had already been taken to the hospital and died later. Initial information indicates the driver was operating a passenger bus on the Lagi ( Binh Thuan ) - Ho Chi Minh City route.

Previously, several similar cases of bus drivers suffering strokes had circulated on social media.

The bus driver is suspected of having suffered a stroke while driving.

After watching the clip, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huy Thang, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Stroke Association, stated that diagnosing the cause of death of the driver based solely on a single clip is very difficult. However, the localized seizure in the left half of the body is a crucial point, indicating that the driver suffered serious damage to the right hemisphere of the brain.

He also noted that the driver's rapid death was most likely due to a large brain hemorrhage causing brain herniation. He explained that with ischemic stroke, even if a major artery is blocked, it takes longer to cause death. Furthermore, hemorrhagic stroke has a higher rate of seizures than ischemic stroke. And if it was indeed a brain hemorrhage, high blood pressure is the culprit in 90% of cases.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huy Thang, although strokes can happen to anyone at any time of day, strokes occurring to professional drivers are a matter of concern because they can affect the lives of many people (along with them in the vehicle and participating in traffic on the road).

"A study conducted in Japan showed that the rate of strokes occurring while driving is 4%. Of those, 16% resulted in subsequent traffic accidents," said Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huy Thang.

Based on this case, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huy Thang advises that, in addition to checking eyesight and hearing, it is necessary to have regular check-ups for underlying medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, diabetes, history of seizures, etc.) for professional drivers. This is extremely important because it can affect the lives of many people.

"Some countries may suggest temporarily suspending a driver's driving if they have health problems, until the situation is under control. For example, it would be unsafe for a driver to frequently experience dizziness, or to have high or very high blood pressure during each health check-up. This is especially true for drivers who frequently drive at night," said Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huy Thang.
