| Mr. Nguyen Van Manh, one of the fish farmers in Tri An ward, suffered heavy losses due to fish deaths. |
Accordingly, at the beginning of the rainy season, the government and relevant agencies disseminated information and warnings to fish farmers in the city to urgently harvest their marketable fish. In addition, farmers should temporarily stop stocking new batches of fish fry to minimize risks.
Great damage
The recent mass fish kill in Tri An ward involved mostly large fish, causing significant losses for fish farmers. The cause was a sudden and unfavorable environmental change. Prolonged heavy rains washed away organic matter from daily life, business, and production activities that had accumulated during the dry season, potentially being carried into the water body by the heavy downpour. Additionally, in areas with high fish mortality, the water flow was very slow, leading to sudden environmental shock and death for the fish.
Mr. Nguyen Van Manh, one of the fish farmers on Tri An Lake who suffered heavy losses, said: "During the recent fish kill, my family lost more than 50 tons of carp, grass carp, and koi. The largest fish weighed over 8kg, and the smallest were over 1kg. In this area, some fish farms lost almost all their fish, while others a few dozen meters away were unaffected. The cause may be due to the water current; farms located in bad currents suffered the most damage."
“I’ve been raising fish in cages for over 20 years, and I’ve never experienced such heavy losses as this time. When heavy rains come, all the fish cages proactively turn on the oxygen pumps to supplement the oxygen. But many cages were so devastated that we couldn’t react in time; we slept through the night and woke up to find the cages completely covered with dead fish,” Mr. Mạnh said sadly.
According to some fish farmers on Tri An Lake, at the beginning of the rainy season, the government and relevant agencies disseminated information and warnings about the risk of fish deaths, especially during the first heavy rains of the season. Consequently, many fish farms proactively planned their harvests to avoid the rainy season. However, over the past month, fish prices have dropped significantly, and the market has been slow. This is why hundreds of tons of marketable fish remain unsold in the farms. Currently, those farms with marketable fish are hoping for quick purchases from traders to reduce pressure on the water environment and minimize losses should any incidents occur.
Temporarily suspend releasing fish fry at the beginning of the rainy season.
Immediately following the mass fish kill incident in Tri An ward, the Department of Agriculture and Environment, in coordination with the People's Committee of Tri An ward and specialized agencies, intensified monitoring of weather developments, lake water levels, water quality, and aquatic disease outbreaks; and simultaneously focused on implementing technical solutions to stabilize production and minimize risks for fish farmers.
City authorities have also intensified their efforts to closely monitor the area, regularly inspecting the site, promptly providing information and warnings about unusual weather phenomena, water quality, and disease outbreaks; and guiding aquaculture facilities to fully implement preventive measures, respond to and mitigate damage caused by prolonged heatwaves, thunderstorms, strong winds, and other extreme weather events.
Mr. Pham Ngoc Huong, a fish farmer in Tri An ward, shared: "Recently, thanks to luck, my family's fish farm was not damaged. I proactively moved the farm further from the shore to minimize risks. Currently, my family's fish farm has about 30 tons of carp, grass carp, catfish, etc., waiting for traders to buy them. However, the selling price of freshwater fish is currently quite low; carp and grass carp are selling at the farm for only over 40,000 VND/kg, and catfish for only about 60,000 VND/kg. At this price, with feed prices rising, farmers are achieving very low profits. Currently, fish farms in this area are focusing on reinforcing their cage systems, mooring ropes, buoys, and auxiliary equipment to ensure safety during the rainy and stormy season. Most farms, following the recommendations of the authorities, have temporarily stopped stocking new batches of fish fry."
According to Nguyen Van Thang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment: Currently, the department is coordinating with localities that have cage and raft fish farming activities to disseminate information and warn people to temporarily suspend stocking during periods of prolonged hot weather or unfavorable water conditions. Fish farmers whose cage and raft fish are ready for harvest should urgently harvest their produce. Regularly clean the cages, remove algae, attached organisms, and other obstacles that reduce water circulation; collect and dispose of dead fish promptly according to regulations, and absolutely do not throw fish carcasses into the lake, causing environmental pollution and increasing the risk of disease spread. Farmers should proactively equip, operate, and increase the use of oxygen-generating equipment such as water fans, aerators, sprinkler pumps, or other oxygen supplementation solutions, especially from midnight to early morning when dissolved oxygen levels in the water are usually low.

Vietnam encourages US businesses to expand investment in high technology. On the morning of June 26th, at the Government Headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung received Mr. Jeff Place, Supply Chain Director of Coherent Group (USA). During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam encourages US businesses to expand investment, especially in high-tech, innovation, and semiconductor industries. Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Nguyen Van Thang, advised: When the time is favorable for stocking, priority should be given to selecting healthy aquatic species with clear origins and good adaptability to the environmental conditions of Tri An Lake. The cages should be stocked at the recommended density according to technical guidelines.
