According to the Integrated Food Security (IPC) Alert Service, 70% of the population in northern Gaza is experiencing the most severe food shortages, more than three times the 20% threshold considered a famine. It is estimated that two people per 10,000 die daily from starvation, malnutrition, or disease. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports that to date, 27 children and 3 adults have died from malnutrition. In total, 1.1 million Gazans, about half the population, are facing catastrophic food shortages; approximately 300,000 people in the affected areas are currently at risk of dying on a famine-like scale.

The prospect of a man-made famine in Gaza has prompted the strongest criticism of Israel from Western allies since it launched its war against Hamas following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

According to Reuters, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, speaking at a Brussels conference on aid to Gaza, said that Gaza is no longer on the brink of famine, but is in a state of starvation... Famine is being used as a weapon of war, perpetrated by Israel itself.

On March 18, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Israeli authorities to ensure unimpeded access for humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

Data from the Integrated Food Security (IPC) staging system, conducted in December 2023, warned of a potential famine in the Gaza Strip by the end of May if Israel and Hamas did not reach an immediate ceasefire and establish sustainable aid supplies. Since then, the necessary conditions to prevent the famine have not been met, while the latest evidence suggests a famine could occur in northern Gaza at any time between mid-March and May 2024.
