Ho Thi Ky flower market (District 10) was packed with customers buying fresh flowers on International Women's Day, March 8th. This year, the prices of various flowers were diverse, and there were many designs to serve the public.
From early morning, Ho Thi Ky flower market (District 10) was packed with customers. People and vehicles jostled, inching forward little by little to buy fresh flowers.
Roses have always been a popular choice for customers during holidays. This year, the price of roses at the market has increased slightly compared to normal days.
Ms. Phuong (22 years old) shared that the price of flowers on March 8th is higher than usual. "Normally, a single rose stem costs only 10,000-20,000 VND, and a bouquet of 5 stems costs around 100,000-200,000 VND, but the shop just announced that a bouquet of 5 stems costs 300,000 VND," Ms. Phuong said.
Ms. Phuong (40 years old) commented: "This year the flower market is more lively and crowded. The prices are also reasonable. I bought flowers as a gift for my mother, but I still took the opportunity to take pictures to send to my younger sister so that we can go see them together in the afternoon."
Mr. Nghia (43 years old) also bought flowers to give to his female colleagues at the office. "This year the market is much busier, and the vendors have displayed more flowers than last year. I bought these flowers for my colleagues, and I've already ordered flowers for my wife," he said.
Ho Thi Ky Flower Market is dubbed "the Lang Biang Plateau in the heart of the city" because it's a hub for fresh flowers, imported directly from Da Lat with diverse designs. Mr. Cuong, the owner of a flower shop, said flower prices started increasing a week ago. "A bouquet of roses that normally costs 200,000 VND will cost 500,000 VND on March 8th," Mr. Cuong said.
This is the first year Selena (19 years old, French nationality) has received flowers on March 8th. She said that although March 8th is International Women's Day, in France people don't celebrate or give flowers to women. That's why Selena was so surprised when she went to the market and saw so many men buying flowers. After strolling around the market, her boyfriend Victor (22 years old, French) gave her a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers.
Roses, conveniently packaged in small plastic boxes for easy takeaway, priced at 400,000 VND per 10 roses, are a popular gift choice.
Besides fresh flowers, gift baskets made of cakes and candies are also very popular. Two sets of cake and candy arrangements cost 500,000 VND each, and orders have already been placed. The flower shop owner said that for International Women's Day (March 8th) alone, she prepared 500 such gift sets. If customers place orders, she will make and deliver them on the same day.
Not far from there is Nguyen Van Cu Street (District 5), a hub for flower stalls in Ho Chi Minh City. Its proximity to flower suppliers, universities, and shopping malls makes it convenient for selling commemorative flowers, so many vendors choose this street to set up their stalls every year. They utilize tree-lined platforms on both sides of the street as display areas for their flowers.
The bear, made from over 900 foam flowers and priced at 850,000 VND, was created by a shop owner for display to attract customers.
The main items sold on Nguyen Van Cu street are artificial flowers, teddy bears, and small bouquets of flowers at affordable prices, ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 VND, suitable for students in the area.
Nguyen Chi Bao (25 years old, wearing a white shirt) and his group of friends went out to choose small woolen flower bouquets costing 150,000 VND to give to their colleagues. "This year, we – the male friends – secretly pooled our money and bought flowers for our female colleagues. I'm very happy that everyone 'nominated' me to go out and buy flowers," Bao said.
