QatarMr. Erick Thohir said that Indonesian football has a golden generation, after defeating South Korea in the 23 U2024 Asian quarterfinals.
“This golden generation fought with great enthusiasm, steely spirit and devoted the best to Indonesia. Thank you," Mr. Thohir said on the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) homepage, after the home team created the biggest shock since the beginning of the tournament in Qatar. "I am proud of the players, coaching staff and all team members - extraordinary people who have made history for our country's football."
Indonesia won tickets to the semi-finals in its first appearance at the U23 Asian Championship, thereby having a great opportunity to become one of three teams on the continent to win tickets straight to the Paris Olympics. In the quarterfinals, Shin Tae-yong and his team won 11-10 against South Korea in a penalty shootout, after drawing 2-2 after 120 minutes of play.
"From the group stage, then to the quarterfinals, the timing, the favorable conditions, the draw all belong to us," Mr. Thohir added. “The team has reached the semi-finals and has no problem not aiming to reach the final. The whole team will continue to hope. The prayers and support from the Indonesian people will help the team achieve higher dreams."
Mr. Thohir is a highly influential figure in Indonesian football, before becoming President in 2023. The billionaire born in 1970 has invested in clubs in many countries around the world, including Inter Milan. Mr. Thohir praised the discipline, psychology and high determination of the entire U23 team at the tournament taking place in Qatar. According to him, getting rid of the burden of playing against a big opponent is the key to defeating Korea - the team that kept a clean sheet and won all in the group stage.
Indonesia's victory was greatly contributed by Dutch striker Rafael Struick - who scored twice in the first two halves. “This result is extraordinary,” the 21-year-old striker said after the win over Korea. "Victory comes from collective strength, thanks to the coach's efforts as well as the support of Indonesian fans."
This is also the first time an Indonesian team has not lost to Korea in history. In the semi-finals, Indonesia will meet the winner of the match between Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan. In case of losing the semi-finals and losing the third place match, Indonesia still has a chance to attend the Olympics, if it can defeat Guinea in the intercontinental play-off.
