Unlike many other banana varieties, the Dai Hoang royal banana is small in size but boasts a more prominent aroma and sweetness. When ripe, the fruit is a golden yellow, as if coated in honey, with a thin, glossy peel. Upon peeling, one can immediately sense a delicate, alluring fragrance. The flesh is soft, with a sweet, rich flavor and a lingering sweetness on the tongue. Importantly, the royal banana only truly reaches its quality when grown in the alluvial plains along the Chau River – an area with fertile soil, a mild climate, and clean water sources.
It was this exquisite flavor that led to this type of banana being chosen as a tribute to the emperor. Legend has it that, during the Tran and Le dynasties, the emperors requested that localities offer this special type of banana from Dai Hoang region, and from that, the name "royal banana" was born, meaning a banana used for the emperor's royal procession.
For generations, the people of Dai Hoang have preserved the tradition of cultivating the "royal banana" as an indispensable part of their lives and local identity. Each banana plantation is the culmination of diligence, meticulousness, and experience accumulated over many generations. Caring for the bananas requires meticulous attention to detail, from selecting the right variety and improving the soil to applying organic fertilizer and harvesting – all must be done using the correct techniques. In particular, the royal banana cannot be grown indiscriminately or just anywhere to achieve the desired quality – it is a plant that is "picky about soil and water," only suitable for the unique soil conditions of the Dai Hoang region.
During the banana ripening season, the village roads are ablaze with the golden color of bunches of ripe bananas. People not only grow bananas for sale but also use them as offerings to their ancestors and as gifts during festivals and holidays. The image of a bunch of golden bananas on the offering tray has become a distinctive cultural feature of the Northern Delta region.
Currently, Dai Hoang royal bananas have been recognized as a typical agricultural product and granted geographical indication certification. Thanks to this, the product not only affirms its quality but also expands its market both domestically and internationally. The royal bananas are carefully packaged and preserved according to standards, serving consumers in supermarkets and agricultural fairs, contributing to increased income for local people and spreading the traditional values of their homeland.
Besides developing production, the locality also focuses on combining experiential tourism with traditional agriculture. Visitors to Dai Hoang – the birthplace of Nam Cao – can visit banana plantations, experience harvesting bananas, enjoy ripe royal bananas right in the garden, and learn more about the history of the craft village and the culture of the Red River Delta region.
Dai Hoang royal bananas are not only a unique agricultural product but also a symbol of a land rich in cultural and historical traditions. In the trend of developing agriculture linked to tourism, OCOP products, and enhancing the value of local agricultural products, preserving and developing the Dai Hoang royal banana brand not only contributes to improving the lives of the people but also serves as a way to preserve the precious traditional cultural values of the Northern Delta region.
