In recent days, the Vietnamese box office has witnessed the simultaneous "dominance" of three horror films: " The Ghost," "Colony: A Swarm of Zombies ," and "The Fire Lord's Mansion ." Except for "Colony: A Swarm of Zombies ," the other two films are Vietnamese.
For many years, June has often been considered a "low point" for the Vietnamese box office, as many films released during this period fail to achieve the expected revenue.
In 2025, "The Bottom of the Lake" only grossed over 27 billion VND, while "Ten Years" stopped at just over 2.2 billion VND. Prior to that, 2024 also saw less than favorable results, with "Claws" earning over 3.8 billion VND and "The Most Beautiful Summer" around 4 billion VND. Notably, in June 2023, Vietnamese films were almost completely absent from the box office, giving way to foreign films.
3 horror films that dominated the box office.
After several days of "ceding the top spot" to The Ghost and The Fireman's Mansion , Colony: The Zombie Swarm - the South Korean horror blockbuster starring Jun Ji Hyun and Koo Kyo Hwan, has risen to the top of the box office.
Colony: The Zombie Swarm has grossed 57 billion VND, becoming the highest-grossing South Korean film at the Vietnamese box office in 2016.

Meanwhile, "Ma Xó ," a Vietnamese horror film released on June 5-6, is showing signs of cooling down after its initial box office surge. The film had a strong impact, consistently topping box office charts and reaching 100 billion VND in just one week of release. To date, its total revenue is over 142 billion VND.
"Lầu chú Hỏa" is one of the surprising hits at the box office recently. The film has repeatedly topped the charts, directly competing with "Ma xó" and "Colony: A Swarm of Zombies" in the revenue race. Currently, "Lầu chú Hỏa" is maintaining a stable performance, with total revenue to date exceeding 54 billion VND.
When it first premiered, few could have predicted that "Uncle Fire's Mansion " would create such a strong impact at the box office. The film didn't boast any "box office guarantee" names in either the director or the cast.

Lầu chú Hỏa chose a purely horror approach, focusing on creating a sense of dread and suspense for the audience, fully exploiting the found footage style (fake documentary), a genre still quite new to Vietnamese cinema, where the entire event is recorded through the camera's perspective of a character.

This was also a wise choice by the Fire Tower crew.
If the film chooses a familiar approach, it may struggle to make a unique impression when competing directly with titles like "The Ghost ," which also explores spiritual elements and family relationships.
However, Uncle Hoa's Tower still frustrates viewers with its somewhat illogical handling of situations and inexplicable decisions, most notably its solitary actions despite facing imminent danger.
On June 19th, the Film Department issued công văn 1040 (official document 1040) encouraging film production, import, and distribution units to diversify content in light of the recent overabundance of horror films.
According to the official document, for Vietnamese films and foreign films imported and released in Vietnam, careful consideration should be given to the selection, exploitation, and portrayal of themes involving violence, horror, superstition, or content that could negatively impact viewers' perceptions and behavior.
At the same time, it must be consistent with Vietnamese customs, national cultural traditions, and the regulations of Vietnamese law on cinema.
