What is sleepwalking?

Sleepwalking occurs when a person wakes up during deep sleep and performs automatic actions such as walking, opening windows, eating, etc. It is a sleep disorder, especially common in children, often related to stress, lack of sleep, or genetics. Usually, the condition resolves on its own; however, in some cases, it persists into adolescence and adulthood. Therefore, sleepwalking can pose a risk of injury due to falls, especially when going up and down stairs.

Causes of sleepwalking

Firstly, there is a 3-4 times higher risk of genetic predisposition if there is a family history of the condition, or it could be due to psychological stress (stress, anxiety from studies or work), lack of sleep or sleep disorders, especially lack of sleep or sleeping in unfamiliar environments, or medical conditions such as high fever or neurological disorders.

What are the symptoms of sleepwalking?

Sleepwalking typically occurs 1-2 hours after falling asleep, lasting from a few minutes to over 30 minutes. The sleeper suddenly sits up, walks around, talks to themselves, or performs complex actions (such as opening a door) while their eyes are open, but they are actually still in deep sleep and unaware of their actions. This phenomenon usually occurs in the first third of sleep, the deep sleep stage, when brain waves slow down (delta waves), and muscles and heart rate are completely relaxed.

What should you do if you see someone sleepwalking?

Seeing someone sleepwalking can be quite surprising and worrying; however, it's important to remain calm and not let personal emotions upset or panic the sleepwalker. Don't wake them, as waking someone who is sleepwalking can confuse, panic, and disorient them. Furthermore, since sleepwalkers don't remember what just happened, they may become upset and agitated.
