Ho Chi Minh City FC has a certain level of confidence heading into their away match against Quang Nam in Round 16 of the V-League 2024-2025, as they are currently on a three-match unbeaten streak. If they secure another victory, the "Red Battleship" will climb into the top half of the standings.
That confidence was evident in the first half, when Ho Chi Minh City FC created several dangerous opportunities. However, shots from Nguyen Thai Quoc Cuong, Dao Quoc Gia, and Joao Pedro lacked the sharpness to beat goalkeeper Nguyen Van Cong.
Ho Chi Minh City FC (in red shirts) faced many difficulties on the Tam Ky stadium.
Dang Van Lam (number 23) was the one who "finished off" Ho Chi Minh City FC.
In the second half, Quang Nam FC unexpectedly surged forward. In the 60th minute, they scored the opening goal after an impressive attacking combination. Van Hiep received the ball from Atshimene with a beautiful backheel pass, then assisted Hoang Vu Samson who raced down to score the opening goal.
Not stopping there, Coach Van Sy Son's players continued to push forward in attack. At this point, weaknesses began to appear and Quang Nam FC was punished by Ho Chi Minh City FC. In the 79th minute, after a long ball, Joao Pedro sprinted down the field, beat Eyenga and finished with a shot to equalize 1-1 for the visitors.
However, that was all that Ho Chi Minh City FC could do. In the 93rd and 90+1 minutes, Atshimene and Dang Van Lam scored two consecutive goals, securing a 3-1 victory for Quang Nam FC. With this result, coach Van Sy Son's team temporarily climbed to 8th place in the standings with 19 points. Ho Chi Minh City FC also has 19 points but is ranked behind their opponent due to an inferior goal difference (-8 compared to -3).
Both teams are at risk of relegation after round 16. Ho Chi Minh City FC may have to fight to avoid relegation.
